Your linked switch's name literally says "unmanaged" while OP's switch is "managed". You are comparing apple and orange. $25 for a managed switch is not bad at all

If you filter by 8 port with special features they aren't bad. I have this switch and would get another for this price. I'm using the vlan functionality as well.

I have the Netgear GS116E which I got from Amazon warehouse surprisingly cheap. I'm interested in this one, but some of the reviews seem kind of rough. Does anyone have experience with this switch? I'm very very tempted at this price. How does the VLAN 802.11Q work.
I have this switch, and have it configured with a VLAN for my IoT devices. The setup was a bit tricky, took a little experimenting, but mostly because I'm a just a home gamer and not a network expert Smilie. Nothing too bad though. I imagine the interface on your GS116E is similar, if not identical.

I defined a VLAN on my pfSense box, and this switch sits behind it. The switch is configured with Port 1 as the trunk port, ports 2-4 configured as home network ports, and ports 5-8 configured as VLAN ports.

Home network ports 2,3, and 4 have a HTPC, MFP, and OpenMediaVault NAS connected to my home network, and IoT ports 5, 6, and 7 have a eufy homebase, a Lutron hub, and an IoT 2.4 Ghz WAP for my TP-LINK WiFi smart devices.

I've had this switch configured and working for ~10 months at this point - it's wall mounted in a media/server closet and has required zero maintenance or intervention.

On the SOHO side I've had great luck with Zyxel managed switches. They are full configurable, relatively cheap (above 8 ports), many fanless options, and reliable.

This is from one of the reviews on amazon, anyone with vlan setup see drops?

"This is a very cheap "managed" switch for a reason. It's a gigabit throughput only if you do not use VLANs. Once you set 802.1Q VLANs throughput drops to 100Mbps. In a way it's not a managed switch."

POE? If not, can someone recommend a POE switch 8 or 16 ports.

100mbps VLANs???! Has anybody else also measured it and confirmed? 100mbps VLANs sound very bad if it's true

Noob here...Is it possible to connect a line from the modem, to this, and then to ubiquity access points or do I still need a router in between?

You need a router between your modem and anything you hook up.

Nothing too spectacular. I got one in May for $27.99. Camelx3 shows it been in that range since end of March. I wouldn't base the 'savings' on the inflated list price of $44.

Interesting comment though regarding 802.1Q dropping the bandwidth significantly... I need to look into that now since I was considering putting IoT on a separate VLAN.

No Link aggregation feature if you care about it.
TP link ones seem to have link aggregation for a buck more: https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Unmanaged-Shielded-Replacement-TL-SG108E/dp/B00K4DS5KU/

I have a Zyxel GS1200-8 specifically for link aggregation (works great BTW) and I could use more ports. Thanks for saving me the mistake. I'd like to have more LAG groups too but that means saving up for the $95 16 port version. Decisions decisions...

Unless you need to pass different networks or plan to do switched VLANS, there is no need for a managed switch. An unmanaged switch would do just fine for those who are need to expand their network ports like a power strip.
