1. Divide $25 by the price per gallon of premium fuel, this is the number of gallons you would get in premium fuel
2. Divide $20 by the price per gallon of 87 octane fuel, this is the number of gallons you would get if you bought 87 octane fuel instead
3. Subtract #1 from #2. This is the amount of fuel you either gain by using the Amex offer, or spend extra on if not using the Amex offer. If this is a positive number then you get more fuel using the Amex offer than you would buying 87 octane, so it was worth using. If it's negative then it cost you money to use the Amex offer.
You can stop here, but if you want to know more:
4. If #3 is positive, multiply this number by the 87 octane price. This is the total dollar amount that you're saving by using the Amex offer.
5. If #3 is negative, multiply this number by the premium grade price. This is the total dollar amount that you "lost" by using the Amex offer.
Example: The price of premium is $3.43 and the price of regular (87) is $3.07.
1. $25 / $3.43 = 7.289 gallons
2. $20 / $3.07 = 6.515 gallons
3. 7.289 gallons - 6.515 gallons = 0.774 gallons extra by using Amex offer -- positive number which means Amex offer is worth using.
4. 0.774 * 3.07 = $2.38 saved by using Amex offer
Footnotes:
1. #1 uses $25 and #2 uses $20 because if you buy Premium and use the Amex offer, you're actually spending $20 to get $25 worth of gasoline. If you don't use the Amex offer you're spending $20 to get $20 worth of gasoline.
2. #4 is multiplied by the 87 octane price is positive because, if you didn't use the Amex offer, the "excess" gasoline you would have gotten would have been paid at the 87 octane price. If it's negative, then in order to reach the $25 threshold you would be buying premium gasoline at the higher price.
