I have the tab A7 10.4" 2020 model, the storage inside is emmc which is very slow. I have to sometimes double tap, the whole thing is v sluggish. I have disabled all animations and even changed the launcher to the pro versiin of prime launcher, it's still sluggish at best.

Spend a bit more and get something with minimum UFS 2.1 storage
A web search shows the Fire is similar except the Samsung A7 Lite has more megapixels for the camera and a recent version of android (v11).

My original Samsung Tab S 8.4 died so I grabbed a Samsung A7 Lite when I was at Costco last month. It was very slow and the display was dim and hard to read. IPS panels don't work well with my eyes so I couldn't look at the A7 Lite for more than a few minutes at a time. I couldn't use it for basic web searches because it was too slow. I returned it the next day.

My wife loaned me her Samsung Tab S6 (non-lite). It is bigger and heavier than the A7 Lite but the Tab S6 has a gorgeous screen and is rather quick. I love the A7 Lite form-factor and weight but can't use it with the technology inside. The iPad Mini seems to be the only contender in the premium small tablet category but the Apple ecosystem is expensive.
And returns through January 16th.

The 32GB storage model has only 3GB of RAM vs. 4GB in this one. I probably could live with only 32GB of storage but wouln't want to give up the bigger RAM option.

Was $110
As Deelseeker stated in his post. BF guarantee with inflationary pressures makes this pretty decent.

How does this compare to a fire tablet? Or the cheapest iPad? I'm looking for a tablet for media watching and maybe light games?

Likely beats a fire tablet by a fair margin, if just in build and screen quality. Can't speak to ipad, apple generally has a better ecosystem but you're paying a lot for a chunky device. I've always been very impressed and very happy with Samsung tablets, they don't skimp on features or specs.

Not bad price, for thus model, considering Costco November deal has thus tablet at same price but at 32GB, but it comes with a memory card, if I read the description correctly.
I'm still enjoying my Samsung S7 from last month deal/cancelations/revised orders.

Generally better than the Fire unless you just like FireOS.

Doesn't come close to even the cheapest current iPad when it comes to performance, build, or likely longevity. But then the question is, is the iPad really 3x better than this? (Since that's about the cheapest price you'll get the iPad for.) That's between you and your needs.

If price isn't (that much of) a bar, I'd go for the iPad.

I bought it at $8.99 + tax at Samsung Education after trade-in my almost 10 year old iPad.
Before trade-in, it was slightly cheaper than this. But the thing is it will come like mid Nov.

Amazon Fire HD10 Plus was a better deal and snappier machine for $109.

I have this. I pretty much use it exclusively for streaming video. It works well for Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, D+ on the couch, or in a hotel bed on travel.

Also makes a cheap entry into the world of digital comics.

Apple TV isn't on Android natively, so if you want to watch Ted Lasso, you have to go through th browser and there are a couple dropped frames occasionally, but nothing too bad.

If you want it for streaming or comics, I think $130 is a good deal for a screen. If you want to do any chrome browsing, reading news or gaming, I might honestly move up a tier or two.

Does this thing have standalone gps? Like if I'm in the middle of nowhere, does it have a dedicated gpa chip to tell me where I am if I download offline maps?

I recently decided to buy the latest "Cheap" iPad. Probably worth it considering apps are designed for it and longer lifespan and resell value. Glad I did and I say this as someone who is an Android guy.
