Is this not hackable? In the past the hackable deals have been a separate listing for the tool and for the battery, so you can cancel one and pick up/receive the other. This one is combined so it seems like it would require a physical return of one or the other.

Sometimes a brotha doesn't want to be corded up..
Lighter? Well that depends on the battery you got .
The corded angle grinder easier to control? Absolutely not
More powerful? Well, that depends on the battery you got..
That guy is living in the Stone Age. Probably still uses a corded land line in his home. Probably has also never used cordless tools. Angle grinders/jigsawgs, circular saws, routers, etc are all tools I love using not tied to a cord. Makes them much safer to use

That looks like a good deal, but I'm holding out for the version with slide switch and brake. Its currently available only in a kit, the tool-only will be available early next year.

There's a version of this paddle switch one with a brake too. I think its a feature worth paying for.

Too bad this deal includes the older fuel grinder model. Would rather have the 2980 (paddle switch) or 2981 (slide switch) versions. The 298x models have beefier motors for faster RPMs (9k vs 8.5k) and have electric brakes. They also allow for larger grinding discs to be used (4.5" - 6") vs this model (4.5" - 5").

I don't understand why m18 tools are popular... Do you guys not have wall plugs? I understand M12 tools because they're light portable and can be jigged to use car batteries... But wouldn't a plug in angle grinder be lighter, easier to control, cheaper, and more powerful?
I used this to sand /shape surfboards in my alley but yea, if you, for an example, want to put a bed liner on your truck and have to mar the surface first this thing would go through like 5+ batteries

You could say the same thing about cordless drills too. (In a previous house) The vise was in the garage, disconnected and at the end of the driveway, like 40 feet away. Running 50 feet of extension cord every time I needed to cut something held in place would become quite a pain

I work on a lot of sites without power and generators are expensive and loud and still have to spend money on fuel

The 298X variants have been around $229, and the 288X are usually around $179.
So for $50 you gain 15% more power, braking, and larger discs.
This isn't one of those grinders that take forever to stop, I just timed how long it took to stop a flap disc at 3.5 seconds.
Most discs I've seen for sale have been 4.5-5.
And this one is 3 pounds, compared to 4.5 pounds for the new one.
Either fuel grinder is overkill for almost every person on slick deals, I'm not sure it's worth $50 more in overkill.

I use mine to grind through security doors and break into space ships; who needs a lightsaber, when you have an angle grinder. OMGLMAO

What is the battery hack?
The "battery hack" is when HD sells a tool or battery and allows you to add a "free item" into your cart before purchasing it. When you place the tool/battery in your cart plus the free item you will have two separate items in your cart. The cost of the two items adds up to your final cost.

The "battery hack" works becasue HD is separating the deal into two line items in your cart and after placing the order you have the ability to go back and cancel one of the items allowing you to get the other at a reduced price. The time limit for canceling one of the items is 45 minutes or less after you place the initial order.

For instance if the deal is for Tool x + free item (let's say a Battery) = $100

In your cart you will have two line items:
Item #1: Tool x = $65
Item #2: Battery = $35
(for a total of $100)

If you purchase both and then turn around and cancel the battery you would essentially get the tool alone for $65. Generally you want to set up the initial order so that you pickup the item you want at your local store and ship the item you don't want to your home. Since these are two different line items you have the ability to choose if you want either of your items shipped, picked up or a mixture of both. In the past if you have both items being picked up at your local store or both items being shipped to your home address and cancel one of the them then the whole order gets cancelled.

When these deals first started showing up on the HD site the deal was generally a tool + a free battery and most people elected to cancel the battery to get the tool at a reduced price... hence this is called the "battery hack."

Now HD does these types of deals with the free item being a battery and/or tool but the same "hack" works.

This particular deal is not battery hack compatible because the tool and the battery are not separate orders. They are a combo pack and are listed as one line item so the "hack" would not work in this instance.
