HDD prices havent dropped because nothing is pushing it to. Average person doesnt need that much space since movies, music and pictures have mostly moved to the cloud. Those were driving the average non techie to buy big drives. Same thing with DVDR DL and blu rays they also had the push from pirates. But no longer.

Best your gonna see is NVME with the new consoles getting the production and tech to the point where its driving costs down.

Yeah I have been holding onto my Truenas server with 14 3TB drives now for about 8 years. It has about 30TB of space and had been running flawlessly. I have been contemplating how to upgrade the drives easily without spending over $1000, as I would prefer to lower the drive count to save energy. But currently I have to keep freeing up space, because I am down to about 4TB free, or over 85% full. But this would require creating a separate raidz and copying 25TB of data.

The easy way would be to buy two large drive and mirror them to add 14-16TB extra, but then I would still be running 8 year old drives, which I would be concerned could start failing at this point.

need better price/GB.
It's like buying a house, small houses have very high $ per sqft. The very large houses have very high $ per sqft.
The homes in middle size which most people buy - they have the best $ per sqft.
Same thing with hard drives!!

No my WD cloud with this..it's just an external drive.

edit: wifi sharing can be done depending if your router has USB HDD support..

If I'm spending such a big premium on a drive, I would simply go the 18tb route, which is $339 at Amazon.

When I have a hard drive come to end of life, I drill a few holes through it to destroy it and then stack them up until an electronics recycling event. Has anyone had any experience recycling drilled hard drives at Best Buy? I mean .. they certainly aren't going to actually "recycle" them for use; I'm fairly sure they go into a shredder anyway.

Yeah, I remember those days (before 2010), and I'm glad their behind us, lol...
But to get back on topic, I see Best Buy sneakily raised the price from $280 to $297, smh. However, I'm glad I made my purchase for this drive yesterday while utilizing the 15% recycling program discount in the process.

4k movies are about 25 to 50GB. games are about 50GB to 100GB each and climbing. 16TB aint enough. also, i think 16TB translates to 14.5TB usable space after format.

Yeah, with hard drives, also, it's all about location location location. Good analogy!

I'd imagine Best Buy's "recycling" is just like your electronic "recycling" event. Neither one is actually going to reuse the drives.

I suspect that's so .. except that the electronics recycling event I was speaking of (at work) requires you to drill a hole or they won't take it. Liability, I bet they are thinking. Anyway, I suspect Best Buy could be subject to the knowledge of the clerk taking the recycled product. He or she may not be aware that the drives are going into the shredder anyway.
