Why not just buy this and trade in to Best Buy for the 13 mini? Upgrading from 12 to 13 costs about $80 (assuming you're not in CA where the tax is much higher) so you're looking at paying under $400 for a new iPhone 13. You could even upgrade to a higher end 13 for a few more $. The BBY deal is probably one of the best ones this year if you have an iPhone 12:

I have Total Wireless, and plan to keep the device for 12 months anyway. Note that the referral program is generous, and you can essentially go the first 5 months for a total cost of $50 for the service using the referral codes ($25 each of the first 2 months, and the next 3 come free with the code ... this if you don't use much data, or 4 months if using more data) (you can add as you need) ... and it's Verizon towers ...

For iPhone 13, it's 800 - 630 = 170 . How do you come out as 80? Am I missing anything?

I want to use Total Wireless in the short term, but prefer not to have the phone locked there (12 months to unlock). I assume I need to activate on T-mobile for 1 month first, and then use it on my pre-paid carrier of choice? Or is BBY accepting a straight trade in and handing me an unlocked phone which I can use?

Also, depends if tax is on the whole thing, or just the difference ...

You're trying to go from a mini to a regular 13. Mini 12 to Mini 13 is about ~$80.

Also, the price varies by your state. In NY where the tax is for the amount you actually paid. In CA (and a few others), they tax you on the full value of the device so I hear it comes out to about $180.

I'm on T-mobile so while they were supposed to activate it, they just 'activated' the sim card that they gave me with the device. I never used it and just used the eSim to activate my device. The number I used was also a different number than what I used for the trade in.

Once I had it on the t-mobile network for 24 hours, I messaged t-force (via Twitter) and asked them to unlock the device since it was fully paid off. You have to mention you bought it from BBY. They processed the request and unlocked the device with 4 days :-)

I only wish this trade in applied to T-Mobile prepaid. So I could keep my grandfathered $30 a month plan.

I went for 12 mini at $299, but the iPhone 11 does have a bigger screen (but no oled) and bigger battery

The only smart one here lol. This is the actual deal. iPhone 13 Mini 128GB for only $370+Tax. You get the Tmobile version from BestBuy and then use their twitter help to unlock the phone as soon as you get it.

I'd go mini. Most up to date across the board and better screen. LCD in 11 vs Retina in the mini. Only downside to mini would be Battery performance.

I'm on Tmobile Prepaid. Would I be able to do this trade-in at BB? Do I need any account verification when trading in? I can't do this online since the site can't validate the account probably because of being a prepaid line.
