Why not just buy this and trade in to Best Buy for the 13 mini? Upgrading from 12 to 13 costs about $80 (assuming you're not in CA where the tax is much higher) so you're looking at paying under $400 for a new iPhone 13. You could even upgrade to a higher end 13 for a few more $. The BBY deal is probably one of the best ones this year if you have an iPhone 12:

Edit: best buy doesn't care if the phone is locked.

I have Total Wireless, and plan to keep the device for 12 months anyway. Note that the referral program is generous, and you can essentially go the first 5 months for a total cost of $50 for the service using the referral codes ($25 each of the first 2 months, and the next 3 come free with the code ... this if you don't use much data, or 4 months if using more data) (you can add as you need) ... and it's Verizon towers ...

This is the one I bought that's currently working:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/402860814219

I saw them on Amazon and bought one, but this was right when the new iPhone 13 came out and Apple patched the old way that RSIMs used to unlock, rendering them useless (at least the ones I had). Even though the Amazon listing said it'd been updated, I apparently got old stock. Not wanting to keep throwing away money and/or wasting time with returns, I just bought the one on the eBay listing and figured if it worked that'd be awesome, if not I'd stick it in a drawer in case it started working again in the future. Low and behold, it worked great! When finding an ICCID to put in, the website I use has two different options; one if the phone is currently locked to AT&T (I used this ICCID for the iPhone SE I had locked to Cricket), and one if it's locked to any other carrier. All I can say is that it worked for me, and isn't as fragile as the little sticker things that you'd stick on or wrap around your sim.

I have heard that the unlock may not survive an iOS update, but my experience has been that it does. I have an iPhone 8 Plus that I've been using since August of last year; unlocked right away using an RSIM and it's gone through multiple updates in that time. No issues at all. Now, what will DEFINITELY cause it to relock is if you do a factory reset, so try to avoid that if possible.
That's similar to the one I bought but I have been trouble unlocking an xr from total wireless. Ever since the iOS 15 I've had issues from a fresh install

If you bought yours before iOS 15 came out, it won't work. It was a week or two after iOS 15 was out that they were updated, even then you could have ordered one and got the older version (that's what happened to me when I ordered one from Amazon). The actual RSIMs and Gevey and what-not may have more advanced settings, and I've seen YouTube videos of some of them still being able to work after the iOS 15 update, but I never got to try on mine because it broke (not the product's fault; they have to be super slim to work on top of an actual sim, but they only last for a few insertions before breaking internally).

If it's still sealed, you can ebay it for a profit. If not, trade it in for $350 in apple GC's at apple...

Rsim has nothing to do carrier's network settings. Rsim basically bypass the apple's network activation lock meaning phone will become network unlock to use just like any unlocked iPhone but in apple's system in back end will still show as locked so anytime you will reset the phone it will connect to apple when setting up as new phone and it will be locked to original carrier and you will need to perform rsim unlock again. Now I am going to rsim. Rsim needs upto date iccid which is basically Sim number. Rsim is a blank Sim and it has a software in the Sim that can be found in settings > carrier > Sim application and you can change Sim card number of rsim manually to update it and once updated it will be able to unlock the iphones. It's that simple. Where do you get upto date iccid numbers? You can Google it or msg me here. I will send you upto date iccid of the day you will want to unlock. Rsim cost about $5
Arg....I wish I didn't pull the trigger last night. I spent $10.89 (+ tax) at maybe 2 or 3am, for the rsim 17 (ebay)

I woulda much rather have gotten it from someone that didn't lose a ton in ebay/paypal fees (let alone that it woulda been half the price for me)

I guess there goes my bright idea to keep swapping the sim to my S8, to work as a free wifi hotspot (unlocked android firmware = doesn't check if you have hotspot plan)

I assume that's not the case with apple, although I have no problem flashing to an unlocked firmware (carrier unlocked firmware....i don't mean sim locked).
And jailbreaking it, would probably kill the security supremacy of apple (the only reason I'm trying out non-android, for the first time in >12yrs)

Can you point this out to who reported this? So far there has been no reports and I don't think they can do that after acceptance of the trade-in and after the point of sale.
agree ! there have been no reports
and BB has never asked (me) for any CC
they do ask for ID/DL which is reqd by law I think now

Why would you give them a credit card to trade in? Just hand over the phone and get the gift card.

THIS ^^^^

just walk in the store like a guest, ask for trade in, if they ask if you have an account - say no - get the physical GC and walk away

that being said - if they REALLY wanted to come after you, for infringing whatever fine print is out there, they do have your DL, so they could but this has never been reported

I am thinking of buying two to Trade in for 2 $430 GCs at BB
seems like free $110 x 2 worth a try, at worse I would waste 30 mins at pick up & return, at best I shall make $220
it helps that BB and wally are right opposite each other here :-P

Let me clarify. An RSIM is one of those flimsy sticker like things (some are actual stickers that stick to the existing sim, others wrap around) that need an actual sim to go with it, they can't be installed on their own. Some are pretty basic, others have a myriad of ways to attempt an unlock. The white SIM I use to unlock is not actually an RSIM, but it is often called an RSIM as that's becoming a bit of a generic term to refer to something that goes into the sim tray to temporarily unlock an iPhone. There's several ways to do a temp unlock but there's two main ones. The first is an ICCID unlock. This is the one you want if at all possible; once the phone has been ICCID unlocked you don't need to keep the RSIM installed. It's possible that the unlock could be lost after an iOS update but generally it survives until a factory reset. The other is a bit of a tethered unlock, the RSIM tricks the iPhone into thinking the sim you're using is from the provider it's locked to. I.e. you can set the RSIM to spoof a T-Mobile sim. Install the RSIM on an AT&T sim, insert into the iPhone, and it thinks you inserted a T-Mobile sim in and will happily try to use it. That kind of unlock requires the RSIM to stay installed; take it off and the phone knows it's an AT&T sim and won't let you use it.

There's an easy way to see what kind of unlock your phone has. If you have the RSIM in and everything's working the way it should, go to Settings-General-About and see what it says under Carrier Restrictions. If it says it's restricted, then the RSIM is actively fooling the phone into thinking the sim that's installed is from the carrier it's locked to; you can't remove the RSIM and keep using the "wrong" sim with your phone. If it says No SIM restrictions, then you should be able to remove the RSIM and put just the regular sim in. The white sim I use to unlock isn't a fancy RSIM (though it's often called an RSIM because it's a bit of a generic term now), it can only do a basic ICCID unlock. But that's the best type of unlock, it's the one that makes the phone think it's truly unlocked and accept any type of sim.

In other words, assuming you can do the ICCID unlock (which was definitely possible as of yesterday morning), you'll have no problem doing exactly what you want. But if Apple patches something and future unlocks are only possible via keeping the RSIM installed over the actual sim then no, you don't want to keep transferring it between phones.
