My friend bought these last month at $99 from Walmart. I couldn't believe how bad this non-THX version sounded. I have heard the THX version of this (non-Bluetooth) plenty of times and was always impressed for the money.

These were pretty trash, my friend gave his away within the month and bought Jamo bookshelves, sub and a little amp. More money, but SO much better sounding.

Last time this was posted I saw a review the Bluetooth was hard to secure and keep strangers off, but in that videos comments others said there is a way to turn off BT discovery. Either way I wouldn't recommend these.
No, we had to take the controller apart and pull the bluetooth module off the circuit board. Someone in our neighborhood had connected to it at one time and it kept reconnecting out of nowhere. The problem is twofold: 1) No password is required to connect, and 2) The wired connection does not override the BT connection like for all other devices in the world. Short of going around the neighborhood and asking every neighbor if one of their devices is connected, there is nothing you can do short of what we did. There is a tutorial on Youtube that shows how to do it. If you live away from other houses, for sure get it at this price. I have been watching the price on the non-BT for a long time and the lowest has been Coscto at $80. For four bucks more, this would be a deal if you don't have neighbors.
i dont think these are thx certified if that matters to you

Do you realize the best sets of speakers ever made do not have a THX certification?
And then I have a Promedia set thats rated Thx for $400 back in the hey day. But then the Ultras came out.
Klipsch 5.1 Ultra's were not THX certified but then, The Klipsch Promedia 5.1's were. The Ultras blew the promedias out of the way.
BUT
What do you think is better, a $50,000 set of speakers with award winning reviews, blowing away stereophiles or home theatres or a set of $400 with a Thx certification??

This has been thoroughly debunked over decades.

the Thx cert for media speakers means A- ZERO, nada, nothing.

No, from what I have read, it doesn't. My understanding is that they have to pay to have that name attached and decided to stop paying. There is a detailed discussion about it somewhere, you might be able to find it on google using the appropriate keywords.
Which makes sense. From a cost perspective why would they use different parts for the two models, it's likely the same exact thing just with a Bluetooth chip.

I think hexa_code was just saying that the THX tag on these specific speakers can be used to discern if you are getting the crappier sounding version, not that the THX certification itself is what is making the difference. More likely just different construction/drivers, etc.

Is there a solution to the bluetooth hijacking problem short of busting out the receiver? I read tons of complaints about it. Seems there is no way to just turn it off?

Seems to be a widespread problem with QC on these. Lots of issues with hum and wiring. Very good price if you can somehow find a set that is sorted out and assembled correctly.

So if it's not a THX thing then the sound quality of all of these Klipsch Pro Media sets have all gone way downhill. The last time I heard a great-sounding set was in 2005.
Almost certainly the quality has gone downhill as they "optimize" their production costs.

I can't really speak to sound, but our memories of what something sounded like 15 years ago isn't great and the competitive landscape for alternatives looks a lot different now.

I was thinking of buying the THX version used, but saw a lot of people's reviews mentioning the subwoofer rattles and distorts when at half way &up volume. So woofer cannot handle a high volume. I may still eventually buy one of the thx versions if I find the urge.

The speakers are fine, but just like Logitech's BT adapter it actively hunts and connects to anything broadcasting a bluetooth signal with no password nor a way to disable it. Quite stupid in my opinion and thus not worth it.

I had this set and yep it does that. I also had the old school 5.1 ones and my buddy had the 4.1 set. The sub was super finnicky on all of them and distorted/rattled if you pushed it a millimeter past the comfort zone. Additionally, all of them needed a recap within a year or two. These new sets are probably better thanks to China's stepping up their production quality but man, it was hard to like the promedia series. They have always been decent, but not for the money and reliability with klipsch amps has always been iffy. This set in particular has been an anomaly to me for years. I have no idea why people keep buying it.

Oh and to those of you asking, THX is a cash grab invented by George Lucas. It's nothing more and should never be used to evaluate anything. By spreading the notion that it represents quality in the slightest is buying into needless added design costs that are then passed on to the customer. So please stop.

If you use smart plugs, you can use one to turn on/off the speakers.
