Please avoid buying large capacity thumb drives. You can get really fast SSDs like the Samsung T7 for about twice the price. Thumb drives write so slow that you will end up not using them. A T7 is about 40 times faster than this thumb stick when writing data and 10 times faster when reading data.
Jump/flash drives are obsolete technology, or at least getting to that point…

I agree with most people here if you need fast USB storage, go with an external portable SSD drive, however that form factor usually requires a cable and a small-cased enclosure hanging out.

If you really need the smallest form factor though, then my recommendation is to get a microSD usb 3.0 reader along with a microSD card instead. These are actually smaller than jump/flash drives themselves usually the size of a thumb. They allow you to swap multiple microSDs at anytime. You get the flexibility to use microSD separately in other devices if desired. The microSD cards typically have faster speeds too. All this would cost you around $10 for the usb reader, and then the cost of a microSD card of your choice. Not all microSD usb readers are performant, but the one that comes with Samsung's latest Pro Plus microSD is a very fast one with support for DDR208 protocol enabling higher speeds than 100MB/sec.
Some microSD usb readers that are good, performant, and tiny are:
Samsung: https://smile.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-...B09B1GNFNT (forced to buy their microSD card with it, but it's a pretty fast one)

Lexar: https://smile.amazon.com/Lexar-mi...B09FP2PXJM
Kingston: https://smile.amazon.com/Kingston...B085P5FDXQ
(By the way, I've attached a screenshot of the performance of the Samsung Pro Plus microsd using their usb reader as an example, 160MB/sec read, 127MB/sec writes)

My goal price for usb storage like this is $10 per 128GB whether you're getting an external SSD(extremely fast, application drive), a microSD card+usb reader(flexibility, moderate speed), or a flash drive(outdated, slow, not recommended).

The 256GB one for $19.28 was front page deal about a month ago,

https://slickdeals.net/f/15399019-sandisk-256gb-ultra-usb-3-0-flash-drive-19-28?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1

Someone mentioned there that the write speed is only ~10-49 MB/s.

Yup. And then it came back for BF and sold out again. So this would be the 3rd wave for the Walmart deal. Still a solid value though if it meets your needs. We load em up with training videos and the new monkeys use them to learn.

Looks like BH deal ends at midnight ET init doesn't sell out before. Limit 1 per order but got 2 shipped here, one order to me, one to my husband.

Walmart link didn't work for me. Got some redirect error. Had to go-to Wm website and search. Drive was listed multiple times but only one listing with deal. And it showed up in search as 32gb for $8. Had to click options to see 256 for $19. Got 4 of those.

Got one of each. It's easy to return the Walmart stuff if it's slow.

I picked up 256Gb from my local Walmart from last FB deal. Some odd reason it wasn't allowing me to buy online and shipped to home.

256gb for $20 works for me as extra handy storage. Have bunch of 128gb laying around, glad to have extra handy storage

I concur with this, the write speeds are very slow!

From what I could dig up, they are physically identical drives. I think the A46 is the generic, international part number, and technical model number for the drive. While the AW46 is used on the packaging for some of the older units to denote they were are sold by Western Digital in and intended for the Americas. This is just a guess based a close look at two spec sheets. The specs were identical in every way, except that the AW46 sheet listed the Americas as the region, and the A46 version included Windows 10 on the supported list (in addition Vista, 7, 8). If it works, see the screenshot.

I actually just checked the drives Walmart sold me, and they show AW46 on the barcode.

20 years ago price matching was the norm. These days, in technology, it's pretty rare. A few retailers offer it for specific products, provided you can find another "reputable" retailer, with a "published" price, has the item in stock, and offers said price on the identical part number. For example, I think Best Buy is price matching the products included in their "Black Friday" deals.

To get around this, retailers will focus their deals on custom versions of a product that only they sell. Usually the variants are based on a more common base model, but have some slight variation in features/build etc, and most importantly, carry with them a different product ID/barcode.

I agree! These drives are really best suited for archival, backup and the distribution of files. They aren't really the best choice if you want to run portable apps, or host virtual machine images. I also prefer drives with USB-C these days.

But the faster options with USB-C are all significantly more expensive. So if you don't need those features, then these are a good alternative at least in my opinion.
