I have both of these and while the hand held one is alright you definitely cant sweep over grass with it to pick up nails. you sort of have to pat the ground and pull the nails off everytime you hear one hit or they will either fall off or the magnetic will not pick up again if it hits a nail in the same spot you already have one.
The rolling version is much better if you need to cover a larger area. As long as the grass isn't too high you can keep rolling and the magnetic is strong enough to hold a decent amount of nails.
In short the handheld is good for a small work area but if you want to sweep your yard after your roof is replaced I'd get the rolling version.
