Since Ms. Killjoy brought it up I'll give my opinion from personal experience.

Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.

The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.

The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.

This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

If you have a home theater speaker set up, physical media is worth it over streaming. If you're using the speakers built into your TV or a soundbar, you won't notice much difference with blu ray vs streaming. The immense difference is in the audio quality.

Got it. Thanks again. Do you think my Samsung KS8000 (Quantum dot/HDR 10/edge lit) TV would benefit from the HDR mapper/enhancer? It gets to about 1000 nits on a 25% window and 1400-1500 nits on smaller windows. I'm guessing the 1080P to 4K upscaler will help either way...
Yes it will, Panasonic claims it's "optimizer" will optimize the PQ to the best capabilities of the display, if it does it shows in its performance.
The mapper/enhancer is just for HDR but yes it's upscaling to 4k is even better than the rest even more so.
The HDR type you will want to set it on my guess would be mid to high luninance, you can try high also see which work best.

I have an LG OLED and was debating between this and the 820. One thing I discovered is that my TV does not support HDR10+, but it does support Dolby Vision. The 420 has HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision, so I went with the 820. Just throwing that out there for others who might not have known and could have the same issue.

It only comes with 3 apps? YT, Prime, Netflix? Can you add Disney, Hulu, etc...?

Purchased the 420 a few months ago to pair with my Samsung 4K. Blu Ray upscaling is fantastic, rivals 4k streaming.

As others have mentioned, the big thing for me with standalone players is the audio. I have a proper 5.1.2 Atmos setup, and audio via streaming can't hold a candle to uncompressed disc audio. This player has dual HDMI outputs that's let's send video and audio out each separately, if you have an older avr that doesn't do 4k passthrough.

with all the streaming, what's the purpose of this? i get better quality etc., but you can't beat ease of streaming.

Was wondering the same thing. Picked up the Sony, but now wondering if I should return and get this. My main TV does not have Dolby Vision, but I do plan on replacing it within the next two years to one that does. Not sure if the difference between HDR and Dolby Vision is that noticeable.
The one with the best upscaler probably matters most, as 99% of my collection is blu-ray.
I've read the best uoscaler is the tv itself. But now wondering if you have better information than I do?

I think you just answered your own question, what's more important best quality or ease of streaming.

A 4k stream will max out at 16mbps, lower than most HD Blu rays. 4k UHD Blu ray can hit 130mbps.

Agreed. I want the full theatre experience, half of which is the sound stage. I am disappointed in the lack of streaming apps for these devices though. I want to be able to get the full immersion sound from streaming also.

As koolmoj pointed out streaming stuffers drastically with AQ so you really don't get "full immersion sound".

If you want the best streaming experience I would recommend going with Apple TV 4K, it's the best streaming device IMO.

Thanks. I just want more than the little speakers in the TV are producing. And I'm not interested in getting an entirely new home theater system. I already have a powerful receiver and large floor standing speakers.

I am a novice on video knowledge to say the least. Could you guys comment on whether this player or the Sony UBP-700/M or the LG UBK90 would be best all around. I have several tv's. My HT set up is a LG C1.
TIA
