Since Ms. Killjoy brought it up I'll give my opinion from personal experience.

Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.

The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.

The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.

This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

If you have a home theater speaker set up, physical media is worth it over streaming. If you're using the speakers built into your TV or a soundbar, you won't notice much difference with blu ray vs streaming. The immense difference is in the audio quality.

4k TVs will upscale if it is being "fed" something below 4K. Most 4K players internally upscale blu-rays and dvds then output in 4k, and usually handle it better than processor in the TV. Supposedly Panasonic is one of, if not the, best in doing this.

Upscaling is software processing done to increase resolution of content from the input resolution to the resolution of the TV. It also includes processing the data so that the image and highlights are presented well. Each manufacturer has different capabilities and priorities in the way they upscale content. Panasonic and Sony upscaling is closest to movie mode. Samsung upscaling is very bright and colors pop. TCL and Hisense currently have less expertise at upscaling. So the answer to your question depends on which TV is doing the upscaling and the model as newer and higher end TV's will have better processing chips than older and lower end TV's.

I bought a used Panasonic ub820 a few weeks ago from Amazon as satisfactory status. They gave me a new one! It was for $350. Should I return it and get this instead since my qn90a don't have Dolby vision anyways.

I mean Best Buy not Amazon.

The LG unit is a great all around unit especially if you can find one for $100 or less
It will play the Dolby vision format which the Panasonic UB420 cannot play
Your money is always better spent on a better display than a better blu ray player
If you already have a higher end TV then consider a higher end 4K player

That is not accurate
You will not beat a high end TV at upscaling
Sony, in my experience, has the best picture processing out there in their higher end televisions

I acquiesce, you are proabably right- unfortunately I have not had the pleasure of owning a high end TV- I am assuming we are something like t the $1500-2000 plus LG C1 OLED, Samsung Neo QLED, Sony BRAVIA XR OLED or QLED series, or similar- I am more of you best bang for the buck TV guy.
I know when I viewed a standard blu-ray on my 4k TV I noticed a difference when I got my Sony X800 than from my regular blu-ray player.

Never understood that argument, like you said a display just processes what it's "fled".

If true a BD player fled into a 4K display would upscale better than a 4K player playing the same BD disc, which is not the case.

There is no set standard on how to process upscaling to 4K or process HDR, that's what separates players in quality/performance.

I wouldn't, you could easily sell it locally for $300(I would buy it for that) then buy this and you make $150 and have the same great player 👍🏻
