Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.
The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.
The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.
This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

PS. I called up Crutchfield and tried to get them to price match this because I have some rewards $ with them I wanted to use. The guy on the phone started doing it, then 10 seconds later goes "Oh, umm apparently that price is less than our cost per unit, so I can't do it for that price because we'd be losing money on it." So I guess that means this really is a good price lol

In some cases it will rival 4K streaming quality. 👍🏻
The mapper/enhancer is just for HDR but yes it's upscaling to 4k is even better than the rest even more so.
The HDR type you will want to set it on my guess would be mid to high luninance, you can try high also see which work best.
I have an older LG 60LA6200 1080p TV that I've been very happy with. I also have a Yamaha Aventage 2070 AVR setup for 5.1 sound. This Panasonic would be the first step in eventually moving to 4k, and honestly, the cheapest step to take first.
Any problem with adding this BD player as my first upgrade, and the TV at some later date?

Has dual HDMI, so can send audio to the receiver and video to the tv. Pretty sure the TV you have won't pass through audio to the receiver, so this would be a great option.

What you gain is the other two formats(BD & DVD) gets a significant benefit/upgrade. Some BD disc will rival 4K streaming.
So overall it's the best choice IMO.

When you finally get a 4K display you just change the settings.

Also, I'm not sure they'll be making too many new 4k players in the future since everything seems to be going away from physical media, so who knows if this model will still be in production a year or two from now if your current TV lasts that long.
You can compare it like we can play games on our mobile phones but xbox ps5 are the best and meant for gaming..similarly these players are the best in what they do..if you have decent home theater setup..I recommend you to have dedicated 4k player

If true a BD player fled into a 4K display would upscale better than a 4K player playing the same BD disc, which is not the case.
There is no set standard on how to process upscaling to 4K or process HDR, that's what separates players in quality/performance.
As you know I disagree with that
