Since Ms. Killjoy brought it up I'll give my opinion from personal experience.

Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.

The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.

The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.

This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

If you have a home theater speaker set up, physical media is worth it over streaming. If you're using the speakers built into your TV or a soundbar, you won't notice much difference with blu ray vs streaming. The immense difference is in the audio quality.

I stand by my opinion, this player upscales to 4K better than any other player in its price range.

As a matter of fact I'm very comfortable sticking to BD disc without upgrading to UHD or waiting for a good deal and I also have an OLED display.

It's basically the same player as the 820 without DV which is irrelevant to you for now.

I wasn't planning on upgrading from my current 4k BD player (Sony 800M, not M2), but the $150 sale price (along with a $10 Best Buy gift card from last Xmas) proved too tempting, and I did like it a bit more than the Sony 800M, but will have to watch some more 4K BDs.

Actually that's incorrect, 1st to view any HDR on ANY display the metadata has to downscaled by tone mapping process for the display to process it.
That's what separates players in quality.

2nd projectors can do HDR(static HDR) what they can't do is Dolby Vision(dynamic HDR).

The HDR processing & upscaling on this player makes it a benefit to any display especially for projectors, pretty much a must have for them.

Straight answer IMO yes it would. That's based on comparison of many BD disc not just one.

Thee best way to find is do the exact same thing he did EXCEPT use several disc because the transfer of movies vary widely.

I liked Arrival & got the 4K from Bestbuy for $7.99 11/15/21, I guess you missed that sd Smilie
I didn't own the blu-ray so like you said for $8 it's not too priced outrageous. For a drab & dreary filmed movie it should be ok in 4K.

People who have a decent 4k theater setup and dont want the picture quality determined by how overloaded their preferred streaming service is on any given day (especially holidays where everyone is at home streaming). Until streaming services can guarantee 4k hq streams instead of just 'what you get, you get' then discs will continue to be relevant to people who want to actually use their 4k tvs.
