Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.
The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.
The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.
This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

I didn't own the blu-ray so like you said for $8 it's not too priced outrageous. For a drab & dreary filmed movie it should be ok in 4K.
That movie is a great example on how this whole jump the chain and get a better display is a better thing to do is a kinda misleading IMO.
I don't know which player you have but if you play the UHD which has HDR and the BD disc you will see how it will not do much with PQ.
Unfortunately the transfer of that movie isn't very good and the advantage of HDR just isn't taken advantage in the transfer.
The display displays what it's fed, no way around that.
Tone mapping doesn't correct a bad transfer it just downscales the transfer so your display can process it.
Thee best way to find is do the exact same thing he did EXCEPT use several disc because the transfer of movies vary widely.
Let me guess they told you the new object based sound is no better than channel based sound, no reason to upgrade.

You do understand there is no real difference(if at all) between the 820 vs 420 concerning Dolby right?
I've lost the remote to my blu ray player, thinking about just getting a modern one like this instead of replacing its remote. Just in the meantime I think it's crazy you can't even use basic functions on some of these just with the buttons on the unit. Again ridiculous purchase criteria for normal people haha, just something that matters in my world for no good reason

The "specs" on the 820 regarding "Dolby" for my overhead setup are NO benefit over the 420.
Because the 820 has "DV" and the 420 does not is completely IRRELEVANT regarding that!!!…..Geeez 🙄
Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are NOT the same thing!!!!!
Here is more humor logic:
You buy a high end 4K OLED display and you say your audio setup "dwarfs" your display but yet your are sweating a $150 player!!!! 🤔
Even better you keep your 1080P BD player because BB told you a 4K player wouldn't be better!!! 😳🤪
To take advantage of actual 4K content you choose to watch compressed PQ and even more compressed AQ 4K streaming on that high end OLED display and high end audio setup!!!! 🤣
Let me guess BB told you with 4K streaming you will take full advantage DV content and you only need this expensive TV to do so!!!! 😜
So out of curiosity why haven't you upgraded to object based codecs?
