Anyone have strong opinions between the Google/Amazon devices (i.e. echo show vs google nest, all things being equal)?

Google seems better at commands and responses. I like the Alexa product line better, but she's constantly messing up in my house. "Alexa, go to bed" runs a shut down everything command for lights and it's annoying to get right. most nights I have to attempt it 3 times. I can stutter at Google from a different room and it'll get it right.

In my opinion it really boils down to which ecosystem you have or choose. The various devices just play nicer within their own groups. I decided to give the Google ecosystem a shot and I've been happy. From the doorbell, stat, Chromecast and speakers. They just work well together. For simplicity in managing devices pick one

I've used both and currently have Echo Show devices but thinking about switching back to Google. The Assistant devices seem to be more customizable and have less intrusive features. Echo Show devices are constantly displaying new skills you should try and chimes in after every request with a "...by the way (insert some new skill you should try)"

Good to know! Is there a reason you have both - can one ecosystem do something that the other can't?

If you backup your photos to Google Photos then get the Google device. Also, Amazon devices are very intrusive with their Ads on the Home screen.

Well Alexa is trying to potentially hurt people...

Generally tech writers prefer Google over Alexa, but as someone said if you're tied into a particular ecosystem them go that route.

I have several of both nest and Google is MUCH BETTER. Also it uses Google web for recipes, answers to your questions. Alexa just doesn't compare imo

Get both.
You'll run into times when one system is feeling grumpy and won't cooperate and the other will.

In my experience I found Google to be compatible with a wider variety of products and services than Amazon

In my house, I have several of them and only one of them I had issues with it not finding my phone on the network during setup or whatever and I had to reset it a few times. I used to have several echo shows but I have YouTube premium so Google Assistant makes more sense for me.

I bought some of these as gifts for nursing home folks to use as a cheap digital photo frame. Many of them had problems with setting it up via the mobile app. It doesn't allow you to set it up from the screen without a mobile device handy. I tried setting one up at the nursing home but it got stuck trying to communicate with one of their phones and it never worked. So for that type of crowd I would hesitate. Returned and got some echo shows instead and the setup was way easier not having to use a mobile device.

Yup. That matches my experience. Hated latency on simple operations and had to retry multiple times. Returned it, even though I got it for 10 dollars cheaper on BF.
