Can a 45 year old learn how to ride these? Cheaper midlife crisis then getting a sports car.
The recommendation for us old fogies is to get a "double drop" longboard. Longboard because it's more stable and great for cruising (and we're never going to do any tricks). Double-drop because it's closer to the ground and easier on our knees.
My kids and I are learning skateboarding together and it's been great so far. I do suggest plenty of safety gear, including padded shorts! Hip and tail injuries at our age are not pleasant.

I'm 47 and picked up longboarding about 5 years ago after a 30 year hiatus. I bought a used Sector 9 longboard after fiddling with a crappy knockoff board from Amazon. Night and day difference. All I've had to do was replace the bearing with some redz because I got caught in the rain a few times. The longer the board the easier it will be to learn and the more forgiving it will be on the joints since it will have more flex and less vibration. Taking it out for a few spins around our 1 mile block is one of my favorite things to do. I have gotten comfortable enough to walk my dog on a retractable leash with it. Don't let your age stop you. Don't buy junk though. Look for used and you will pay about the same for a quality kit. Best of luck....

Some folks are saying buy used quality board, buy a quality board, go buy some wood.
Personally I like the bamboo look and will laser my own graphics to make it my own. Changing out the bearings makes sense to me and ride the current wheels until I get a feel of what I want. Once I master the longboard I want to upgrade the deck to an
