this is funny, i decided to look into what my drive is and see if this is an upgrade, and **i bought the exact same drive, from newegg, in 2012 for $55 with a 10 pack of BDRs thrown in for free**
it still works, granted i barely used it. so good deal i guesss
It might be the same model number, but that unfortunately doesn't make it the same drive...you can't do anything with UHD discs unless it was manufactured after 2015, per all the instructions on the various links posted on this thread.

you mean it won't play UHD discs? even without a firmware update? I don't use my PC in my home theater so it's never come up. and i'm not interested in ripping discs.

Correct. My understanding is that it is not possible to make older drives work with UHD discs at all.
This model number is listed as a "UHD Friendly" drive, which means it would never play UHD discs out of the box, but can have a firmware change to make it work, and all the firmware information states "make sure your drive was built after 2015."
If you don't care about UHD, your older drive will still work fine for everything else; it's just annoying when manufacturers retain the same model number while changing the product's capabilities.

thanks a lot for the info! really interesting and i agree quite vexing for manufacturers to do that vs just having a different model number for drives that work with UHD. It doesn't affect me now but who knows, maybe in the future i would've wanted to burn an UHD disc or something. This might've saved me a lot of aggravation lol.
it is interesting though that LG essentially kept the price of this drive the same for a decade, using same parts for the most part, and just adding functionality. If anything it staying $50 is a great deal in 2022. Accounting for inflation alone $50 in 2012 is $63 now and the buying power of $50 dropped to $40 over the 10 years.
I own this very same drive and bought it at $60-70 for my AMD 3700X rig I built back in 2019. And I got another similar LG drive I purchased way back in 2011 at $100 for an Intel 980X rig which is still functioning to this day.
