yes, this is the new version:

frankly, without starting a debate, any decent full synthetic in the $10-$20 range is fine enough for everday use if changed regularly. but if you have an exotic or luxury car, you'll probably want something with european specs.

Good deal. Even the Walmart in-house brand is now $20. Then again, what hasn't increased in price.

You don't get a discount for 'no tomatoes,' but you always pay more for 'extra cheese.'

Good deal. The Kirkland signature 4pack is just SLIGHTLY cheaper at $16.25 per 5qt. Repped.

So, just an endorsement for anyone on the fence about the quality here. I had been trying to find a solution to an issue on my truck where the timing chain stretch was causing some clatter which will result in eventual failure and a $5k repair. I've tried additives and other oils, but this is the first one that caused the issue to stop and its never come back. It lived up to its promise which is unbelievable since all the marketing on oil bottles are usually just marketing buzz words. I now only use this in my vehicles (until I get all electric and can ditch these ancient dinosaur-driven fossils and their constant maintenance). Hopefully the name change doesn't change the characteristics of the oil itself.
BTW for those concerned about timeframe for oil changes, it's more about short trips that brings moisture into the engine. Combustion creates moisture and it accumulates in the oil unless it is allowed to get up to operating temp to drive it back out. So if all you do is run your vehicle a few miles every couple of days then change your oil more often or try to get in a good drive every month. If you never touch the car for like 3 months at a time I wouldn't worry so much.

Awesome. I hate paying a lot of money for oil because my car takes about 4 quarts and I get stuck with 1/5 filled bottles every time.

What if I have a european car like a VW GTI which is not a luxury car? Would you still recommend a non euro spec oil?

Yep. Unless you're using your vehicle for super heavy duty stuff or you have a design flaw (or as European manufacturers call them, "advanced features"), then you can get several hundred thousand miles out lubrication in most modern cars by just changing the oil and making sure you're halfway paying attention to the type/weight.

Soooo many endless internet arguments are like "5w-30 sucks, 5w-40 is way better" from people who buy new cars every few years.
I used to drive a Saab, it had a lot of "advanced features".

One of them is that they had a tendency to sludge. I would see pictures of pans that were pulled and would look like some evil caramel. Something about air flow in the motor and a bad PCV hose setup.

Even though they didn't call for it, everyone said to always run synthetic in that car.

I put maybe 800 a year on my truck, I almost buy more batteries than oil, lol. But anyways, I change once in the spring, and honestly feel like that might be too soon, but it's so quick, cheap, and easy to do, that I'd rather not risk it on a 245,000 mile engine.
I have a similar situation with my truck. I change the oil in my truck once per year. Going on 9 years now. So far no problem.

I have a Chevy truck that I got 10 years ago that gets maybe 2500 miles per year. I change the oil once a year and it's still running well.
Ditto. Once per year on a 1969 Chevy C10. No problem with once per year.

Stick with a VW 505 00 or whichever VW spec your car recommends. Much higher specs equivalent to any Mobil 1, Castrol EDGE, or Pennzoil Platinum product (ACEA). The cheap syns like walmart, costco, etc only meet API and will not last the drain intervals recommended by VW.

Yep, the late 90s VW Passats with the turbos we're like that. On top of the fact that turbos cook the oil a little faster than NA engines, in order to make a transverse engine fit in a longitudinal car, they shrank and/re-routed some of the oil lines, which caused some blockage and sludge.

For an average American driver, the need (not just a suggestion) to use synthetic at aggressive intervals was usually ignored with terrible results.

On one hand, mainstream cars shouldn't be so finicky, and Euro brands have notoriously ignored US (and Asian) driving habits to their own detriment. OTOH, it's not that hard to RTFM and use the right oil.

Then you can focus on all the electrical problems!

This concept is exactly why it is impossible to compare or claim there is a best oil or change interval. Every single engine is different, everyone drives differently in different temperatures and environments. Make up a number here but I believe 99.99% of gut feelings about the long term thoughts of a specific brand are not repeatable and few cars are pronounced dead only or could have prevented if you used brand X instead of Y. For every person that overthinks it based on hunches and theories there is an equal amount of small company fleet vehicles that have random change intervals with random oil and have hundreds of thousands of miles on them still humming along.
This is the 10th time I said I would never post again in an oil thread Wink

Just for random reference. My last order for this was $15.90 in 2017

Although this isn't a crazy stupid good deal, right now this is a very soild price on oil. There aren't any rebates that I'm aware of outside of Shell Rotella diesel oil. As already mentioned even the Walmart Supertech 5 qt is now $20. So getting this at $16.XX is solid for sure. Thanks OP. Even though I don't really need I grabbed 3 as I will need in the coming months for sure.

After he buys 5, he will be stuck with an extra quart again. I think you meant after he buys 4

Purchased a jug of 5W-20 and 5W-30 ... along with some PurOne filters. The total came to a little less than $60 shipped to the house. This sounds like a pretty good deal ... right? If this is a good deal then previous years were fantastic years. I've become spoiled in being able to do full oil changes for about $40 (with rebates). I hope the good old days have not gotten up and gone.

Thumbs up ...

Which is better? I've always used Mazda 0W-20 in my car, but this is quarter of the price, so may go with it.
Skyactive engines require more moly in the oil... You can add yourself or get an oil high in moly. I used to get the mazda stuff, but then i went with idemitsu advanced moly. Otherwise, this stuff should work. I would use the castrol advanced in my mx5. I will have to check the blacklstone lab reports between the two.

Currently i am trying out the supertech stuff in my silverado. I was running the advanced, now the regular supertech full syn. I will put this magnatec in next and at this price, it is under $4 a quart, so I subscribed to two every two months... I drive alot, not for work, just because I just do not sit still, so I change my oil every 6k, but bumping it down to every 5k. I change my oil every 2 months in my truck. The other vehicles, lexus nx/rx i change less frequently, but use castrol advanced or extended in those... Wife vehicles so I just keep stuff in there I really trust while i play around with mine.
