The more modern mesh routers use a separate dedicated band for Wi-Fi Backhaul (usually triband). This one is dual band and somehow selects an "optimum" band for backhaul.

——

How does it choose which wireless band is the backhaul? why can't i set this in the app?
The Deco S4 is a dual-band Mesh WiFi system, and utilizes intelligent algorithms to determine which band is optimal for backhaul transmission between each Deco node. This is determined automatically by the firmware and cannot be manually set. If you would prefer a Deco modal with a dedicated WiFi backhaul, we suggest considering one of our Tri-Band Deco models, such as the Deco X68 or Deco X90.

Are you trying to extend the range of the G3100? I would use the E3200 extender.
Yes i am looking to extend the network. I already have 1 e3200 extender for the same floor. Currently Router is on 2nd floor and planning to extend to basement. Any recommendation? TIA

Dual band only. Tri-band would have been slick.

anyone know if these are 3 identical routers? such that I could set up a mesh of 2 nodes and then use the third at a smaller apartment?
Yes, they are identical

im not a techie, for the money I assume this is better than the 199 costco deal, TP-Link Deco X60 Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 Whole-Home Mesh Wi-Fi System, 3-Pack, I know it may have some addlt features but as non techie person, my hedge is to go for the cheaper one.

Quick question on backhaul - if I was to set these up, each approx. 50-75' from each other on different floors of the house, I'd like to wire them all up to Ethernet. Just a little confused, the first one would be connected to my cable modem in the basement - now for the other 2 - do they have to be daisy chained, or can I just run another 2 long Ethernet cables back to a central point like the cable modem/1st deco and somehow connect all them with a switch?

Would be much easier to do that then connecting one to another based on my home layout. Thanks!

depends on your priorities. if you don't know the difference between wifi 5 and wifi 6, i'd guess you don't pay for or care for the difference either?

Really shows the race to the bottom with tech sometimes. These dual band systems seem to be dominating and outnumbering the tri-band systems. Strange, often tech gets better and cheaper not worse and cheaper.

Yes and no. You would also have to buy a cable modem. This is a router only and only broadcast the signal. I would suggest also buying a cable modem and not pay them. You'll probably make your money back in under 2 years. You can find modems that work on their site.

I set up an S4 network at my father in law's house a month and a half ago and the installation was effortless and it's worked flawlessly ever since. No outages, no need to reset the connection, solid coverage across the whole house.

We were actually able to cover the whole house in sold wifi with just 2 of the satellites so my project for spring break is going to be building a weatherproof enclosure and running an extension cord so we can install the third unit in the backyard.

Dang, paid 149 last week for this! Works amazing
What are your speeds? And coverage area? I've had very bad experiences with TP-Link in the past with coverage and speeds.
