Great TV. Updated the firmware once. Than factory reset so android TV is disabled again. Plug in Roku and never looked back.


Did play with Android TV for a bit but like others, it slows the whole TV down and becomes useless. Super fast once you disable it by not setting up network.

I have a 65 with android and love it. Every once and awhile a certain app will freeze or not work properly but it's fairly simple to force close apps. I also have a Roku tv and prefer the Android os much better. But you can always buy a Roku stick later if you dont like it.

I believe so. Friend has one and has the network not setup. Without network, it seems Android TV doesn't do much. Only slowdown is if the TV is unplugged as Android TV has to boot up, but once started up and on any other input it's very quick.

I would give it a try.

We just bought this at same price about a month or two ago. We like it and have no problem with the built in Android. It frees up the three HDMI ports for our Blu-ray player, Nintendo Switch, and second monitor for our computer. I especially like the fact you can switch from video gaming to streaming by just hitting the home button.

I'm not the guy you're asking but I think I can answer. "Disable" is a not really the best choice of words. The TV is a simple computer and its operating system is Android, that can't be changed. But like many of us, he just renders the TV "dumb" by not connecting it to the internet, and instead uses another device plugged into one of the TV's HDMI inputs to do everything. (Of course having to buy such a device adds to the overall cost.)

For example, a Roku box or stick, Amazon Fire TV cube or stick, Google Chromecast, AppleTV, nVidia Shield, gaming console, or even a Windows/Mac/Linux PC.

What was the reason for updating if you don't plan to have it connected to the internet?

Ugh, I would've assumed after 2 years, a TCL 4 series would have better image quality than my 2018 TCL 5 series (which has no local dimming and isn't very bright for HDR), but apparently not (the 2021 4 series is about even).

Looks like I'm still stuck in the 5-series or above price range, which because of inflation means I still gotta pay more.

I bought this TV from the last deal for $500.

Due to the price and brand, I had super low expectations. I never heard of TCL and never had experience with this brand. However, it's not that bad. I put the TV in my living room for sports and shows. The TV is alright considering how cheap it is. I have a $2k+ 65 Sony OLED TV in my family room to watch movies and games so it's not fair to compare TCL to Sony but for my purpose, this TV works. Also bought the GeekSquad 5 year protection plan since someone said their TCL TV lasted two years.

If you're looking for a great, superb, amazing viewing experience, this TV is not for you. Pay the extra money and get the OLED. It's worth it IMHO.

How is that Westinghouse treating you?, I had it in my cart but did not pull trigger cause previous experience with some 40" TV. (which I was able to return back to Target couple of years ago)

I've never owned Westinghouse for the reasons I listed originally. Like you get what you pay for and specifically in lifespan of the product. At least that's what I assume.

Counterintuitively, I actually think they would get more expensive. Cost of a Smart TV is subsidized somewhat by the revenue the manufacturer gets from inserting ads, and collecting and selling data.

moved to a new apartment and accidentally broke my cheapo 4 year old hisense 55" 4k@60 TV. This is gonna be huge for my bedroom. my living room TV is only 65" albeit a higher end TV but is this good for a bedroom PC? I will plugin my gaming PC and an Nvidia Shield TV
