The multiple ways of using this $10 line for home internet are:
1. T-Mobile Gateway + Cudy N300 or X6 which are wifi only routers to mask hotspot usage with TTL set on the external wifi router. You can use other wifi routers for this purpose but there's a menu page in the Cudy routers which makes setting TTL easy - Courtesy waterchange
1.1 Cudy router like Cudy LT500 or LT18 or the 5G P8 work as a single device with modem + wifi router. Work well for home internet. Nice thing about the Cudy modems is easy TTL (and imei magic if necessary). - Courtesy waterchange
2. M2100 hotspot device - Hit or a miss - native out of the box but less reliable
3. Orbic 5G hotspot device - more reliable than the m2100, however some people have reported throttling after 1st couple of months
4. Gateway + Project Genesis - works most reliably
5. TMOHS1 - ~ 30-50 mbps out of the box, no TTL update required
6. Tmobile Franklin - ~30-50 mbps with TTL update - the most reliable as of right now, however limited speed.
7. M2000 won't pull data from anywhere.
8. GL.iNET Spitz GL-X3000NR easier to use than Cudy and better performance but expensive. Great form factor and performance. Presets for T-Mobile TTL settings and advanced cell features like tower/band lock. External antennas.
9. M3000B works out of the box with T-Mobile version. Has battery preservation features and ethernet port. Some users say to switch 5G mode to NSA if the hotspot restarts frequently in your area.
Add/update if you have more/better info.

They will still lock you to a 2 year EIP even if it's free (They'll make a monthly credit to cover the tablet EIP)
Meaning you'd end up paying $10 for 2 years ($240) for a $129 tablet.
So if you're only doing it for the tablet then it's not worth it
soc code ZB10HSTI is the one you want.

I try to follow the paths of least resistance, and as I said above that's the Cudy X6 AX1800 where the TTL can be set right in the router's settings with no mods/flashes/scripts/etc.

I think someone here said that he got it on Amazon on Black Friday for around $40.
The next easier path I found is the NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 that can be had pre-owned on eBay for around $25+/- or less, but it requires flashing Fresh Tomato which is a two step flashing process with two different flash files.

Isn't Netgear R7000 better running Xwrt Merlin firmware?
I can't say since I've never used it, but I understand that Merlin FW is really good for Asus routers.
In my case, I've used the original Tomato FW since a long time ago with Linksys WRT54G routers and I was familiar with it, it was easier for me, and it has the TTL setting option.
On another note, I plugged the TMOHS1 in the front USB 3.0 port of the Netgear R7000 with a USB A to USB C cable, set it to the 4G/LTE in the WAN0 instead of the DHCP, set the APN to fast.t-mobile.com, shut down both the PC and the R7000, restarted the R7000 to ready and then the PC, and there is internet access thru the TMOHS1, wired or wireless with the R7000.
Given the excellent signal of the R7000, one can have pretty good WiFi coverage for decent speed internet access thru the TMOHS1.
Besides, Fresh Tomato has the option to set the WiFi transmit power of the router on both WiFi bands, 2.4/5Ghz, to something above the default 100mW for the 2.4Mhz and 200mW for the 5Ghz for the USA.
That is not recommended as it may interfere with a neighbor's WiFi, but if the router is in a building/apt./etc. with concrete/reinforced or steel wall/structure it may help, but keep in mind that the return sending device, tablet/smartphone/PC/etc., does not have the ability to increase its transmit power.
Of course, the higher the transmit power, the hotter the router will run.
Also, using the WiFi Analyzer app to see which WiFi channel is least used or unused in the area and setting the router to it will help.

I am using Franklin T9 with TTL change. Will T9 also work if wired to R7000 via USB as you described?
Thank you.

The TMOHS1 connected to the R7000 here is also getting power to have its battery charged from this connection.

If it works on Asus routers it should work on the Netgear R7000.

Reboot your router and if done correctly all data should be showing as web data on your tmobile business dashboard. This script will work for both the tmobile home internet gateways currently available. Ebay or local CL will be your best bet in sourcing these device...... Just make sure they are not blacklisted. Hope this helps.
- Do you know how to tell if the firewall-start script is actually executed (besides it all working as expected)? "JFFS2" shows up in the "System Log" of the web interface a few times but I don't see any mention of "firewall-start" or "iptables". Does any one know if there's a log file on the router that I should look at after putty-ing in to confirm that "firewall-start" was actually executed?
- When the router is connected to the T-Mobile 5G gateway, I can't access the router at 192.168.1.1 maybe because the gateway is on a different (192.168.12.*) subnet. Are you able to access your Merlin router (web interface or putty) when it's connected to the 5G gateway?
- If you boot up your Merlin router without it connected to the 5G gateway and then plug in the ethernet cable to the gateway after bootup, does it pick up the internet connection? Mines won't so I'm curious if this is normal behavior or not.
If anyone has any suggestions on what I should look into or test to get this working, I'd appreciate any feedback! If anyone has any suggestions on what I should look into or test to get this working, I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks.1. In your: (b) set "no" for both "Extend the TTL value" and "Spoof LAN TTL value",
Most probably it should be set to yes to at least the extend one.
When the extend option is set to yes, does it give you options like +1, +2, +3, +4, or -1, -2, -3, -4, or does it allow setting a custom TTL #, like 68?
It seems to me that if you set it to no, it'll use the default TTL value, probably 64, and so it'll use hotspot and not data.
If it has a +2 or +4 options, try those. The TTL will then will be 66 or 68 and use data, not hotspot.
Similarly with the spoof setting?
2. The router should be independent of the 5G21 and it should be able to be accessed on its own IP either wired or wirelessly. Double check the IP, it may be something else like 192.168.10.1 (Cudy routers use that).
3. You said:
Merlin router without it connected to the 5G gateway and then plug in the ethernet cable to the gateway after bootup, does it pick up the internet connection?
It should not as it now is an independent router without internet access.
But you should be able to connect to it using its IP address to see its settings.
If you can't, then the IP address is something different.
Not sure if the Merlin hacked router can be reset without bricking it so be careful.
May have to start from the beginning but must know the exact steps to avoid bricking the router (like flash the original Asus FW and continue from there).

You'll need to change the IP address 192.168.12.1 in the script to match your specific T-Mobile gateway. You can find the default gateway IP by running this command manually from Putty.
#!/bin/sh set -x # Apply missing setting. modprobe xt_HL modprobe xt_hl # Main Rule. check_home_internet () { DEFAULT_ROUTE=$(ip route | awk '/default/ {print $3}') if [ "$DEFAULT_ROUTE" = 192.168.12.1 ] then echo "Set TTL 66 for KVD21" iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j TTL --ttl-set 66 ip6tables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j HL --hl-set 66 logger "Set TTL for KVD21" elif [ "$DEFAULT_ROUTE" = 192.168.56.1 ] then echo "Set TTL 66 for MR6400" iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j TTL --ttl-set 66 ip6tables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j HL --hl-set 66 logger "Set TTL for MR6400" else echo "Apply TTL 65 for all other (66 for USB)." iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j TTL --ttl-set 65 ip6tables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j HL --hl-set 65 iptables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -o usb0 -j TTL --ttl-set 66 logger "Apply TTL for all other." fi } check_home_internetedit: turns out "iptables -vL -t mangle" shows that my firewall rules aren't being run when the router turns on. If I run the "firewall-rules" script manually and then re-run the "iptables" command, at that point I'm able to see the TTL rules. Billing cycle ends in 6 days so I'll go frustrate myself again in a week!
edit2: after running "firewall-rules" manually then plugging in the 5G gateway into the Merlin router, I'm back to full speed data! In the past, I would have to ssh/http to the Asus router without it connected to the 5G gateway otherwise I couldn't access the Asus router. And then after plugging in the ethernet port to the 5G gateway, the Asus router would complain it was still not connected. But it worked this time and all appears good except for figuring out why my jffs "firewall-rules" script isn't being run on boot.
Edit: and of course everything now magically works even after the Asus router reboot even though I didn't change anything! Go figure.

Very nice..... Glad to hear you got it sorted out. Enjoy!

The Nokia 5G21. You do need a secondary router to not pull hotspot data.
