Just an FYI if you're just getting this for the "free" tablet. The tablet is a Galaxy A7 lite which only costs $200 ($129 on Amazon)

They will still lock you to a 2 year EIP even if it's free (They'll make a monthly credit to cover the tablet EIP)

Meaning you'd end up paying $10 for 2 years ($240) for a $129 tablet.

So if you're only doing it for the tablet then it's not worth it

Not on the "free" tablet, lol. In all seriousness, don't choose the plan with TE in the title as that one is tax exclusive (you have 2 choices)

soc code ZB10HSTI is the one you want.

You're probably far more of an expert on the setup you mention than anyone here.

I try to follow the paths of least resistance, and as I said above that's the Cudy X6 AX1800 where the TTL can be set right in the router's settings with no mods/flashes/scripts/etc.
It's available on Amazon for around $65+/-:

https://www.amazon.com/Cudy-WiFi-Router-AX1800-Smart/dp/B089KBTXHR/ref=rvi_sccl_4/140-7334118-752611... [amazon.com]

I think someone here said that he got it on Amazon on Black Friday for around $40.

The next easier path I found is the NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 that can be had pre-owned on eBay for around $25+/- or less, but it requires flashing Fresh Tomato which is a two step flashing process with two different flash files.
Here are some helpful links to do that:

Also, the R7000 Firmware should be flashed to the latest version BEFORE Fresh Tomato is flashed:

Isn't Netgear R7000 better running Xwrt Merlin firmware?

That's possible, depending on what one aims for.
I can't say since I've never used it, but I understand that Merlin FW is really good for Asus routers.

In my case, I've used the original Tomato FW since a long time ago with Linksys WRT54G routers and I was familiar with it, it was easier for me, and it has the TTL setting option.

On another note, I plugged the TMOHS1 in the front USB 3.0 port of the Netgear R7000 with a USB A to USB C cable, set it to the 4G/LTE in the WAN0 instead of the DHCP, set the APN to fast.t-mobile.com, shut down both the PC and the R7000, restarted the R7000 to ready and then the PC, and there is internet access thru the TMOHS1, wired or wireless with the R7000.

Given the excellent signal of the R7000, one can have pretty good WiFi coverage for decent speed internet access thru the TMOHS1.
Besides, Fresh Tomato has the option to set the WiFi transmit power of the router on both WiFi bands, 2.4/5Ghz, to something above the default 100mW for the 2.4Mhz and 200mW for the 5Ghz for the USA.
That is not recommended as it may interfere with a neighbor's WiFi, but if the router is in a building/apt./etc. with concrete/reinforced or steel wall/structure it may help, but keep in mind that the return sending device, tablet/smartphone/PC/etc., does not have the ability to increase its transmit power.
Of course, the higher the transmit power, the hotter the router will run.
Also, using the WiFi Analyzer app to see which WiFi channel is least used or unused in the area and setting the router to it will help.

Hello,
I am using Franklin T9 with TTL change. Will T9 also work if wired to R7000 via USB as you described?
Thank you.

It should work as long as the USB A to USB C cable can carry both data and power.
The TMOHS1 connected to the R7000 here is also getting power to have its battery charged from this connection.

Also see this:

If it works on Asus routers it should work on the Netgear R7000.

See my posts above about the R7000 and loading Fresh Tomato to it.

Download the latest Merlin FW for your Asus router and flash, just like updating your stock FW. Once flashed, enable SSH on your Asus. Then on a PC download and run Putty. This is the program you will use to connect to your Asus router and run the following commands:

ASUSWRT-Merlin RT-AC68U 386.9_0 Fri Jan 6 20:03:03 UTC 2023
admin@RT-AC68P-9878:/tmp/home/root# chmod a+rx /jffs/scripts/*
chmod: /jffs/scripts/*: No such file or directory Note: I got an error because the directory was empty, firewall-start doesn't exist until the nano cmd

admin@RT-AC68P-9878:/jffs/scripts# chmod a+rx /jffs/scripts/* now chmod works because the file is there

Asuswrt-merlin with jfffs custom script enabled

Code:

#!/bin/sh

# Apply missing setting.
modprobe xt_HL
modprobe xt_hl

Reboot your router and if done correctly all data should be showing as web data on your tmobile business dashboard. This script will work for both the tmobile home internet gateways currently available. Ebay or local CL will be your best bet in sourcing these device...... Just make sure they are not blacklisted. Hope this helps.
I have four of these tablet sims in Cudy LT500 routers shared with different family members and recently got one sim card back that I can play with. I picked up a Nokia trashcan (5G21) and have a T-Mobile TM-AC1900 flashed to an RT-AC68U running Merlin and I've been playing with getting this working. But despite everything I've tried, I'm pulling hotspot data as download are dog slow after I purposely exhausted the 10GB hotspot data allocation. I think I did everything right but obviously I'm missing some step: (a) choose "yes" for "JFFS custom scripts and configs", (b) set "no" for both "Extend the TTL value" and "Spoof LAN TTL value", (c) create the "firewall-start" script in /jffs/scripts/ and add read/execute permissions. So now I'm in debugging mode and have a couple of questions that I'm hoping you or anyone else might have answers to:
  • Do you know how to tell if the firewall-start script is actually executed (besides it all working as expected)? "JFFS2" shows up in the "System Log" of the web interface a few times but I don't see any mention of "firewall-start" or "iptables". Does any one know if there's a log file on the router that I should look at after putty-ing in to confirm that "firewall-start" was actually executed?
  • When the router is connected to the T-Mobile 5G gateway, I can't access the router at 192.168.1.1 maybe because the gateway is on a different (192.168.12.*) subnet. Are you able to access your Merlin router (web interface or putty) when it's connected to the 5G gateway?
  • If you boot up your Merlin router without it connected to the 5G gateway and then plug in the ethernet cable to the gateway after bootup, does it pick up the internet connection? Mines won't so I'm curious if this is normal behavior or not.
If anyone has any suggestions on what I should look into or test to get this working, I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks.

Not familiar with your Merin setup but just a couple of quick observations that may/may not help:

1. In your: (b) set "no" for both "Extend the TTL value" and "Spoof LAN TTL value",
Most probably it should be set to yes to at least the extend one.
When the extend option is set to yes, does it give you options like +1, +2, +3, +4, or -1, -2, -3, -4, or does it allow setting a custom TTL #, like 68?
It seems to me that if you set it to no, it'll use the default TTL value, probably 64, and so it'll use hotspot and not data.
If it has a +2 or +4 options, try those. The TTL will then will be 66 or 68 and use data, not hotspot.
Similarly with the spoof setting?

2. The router should be independent of the 5G21 and it should be able to be accessed on its own IP either wired or wirelessly. Double check the IP, it may be something else like 192.168.10.1 (Cudy routers use that).

3. You said:
Merlin router without it connected to the 5G gateway and then plug in the ethernet cable to the gateway after bootup, does it pick up the internet connection?

It should not as it now is an independent router without internet access.
But you should be able to connect to it using its IP address to see its settings.
If you can't, then the IP address is something different.
Not sure if the Merlin hacked router can be reset without bricking it so be careful.
May have to start from the beginning but must know the exact steps to avoid bricking the router (like flash the original Asus FW and continue from there).

I had a similar issue testing mine, once the hotspot data limit hits, the speed slows down no matter the TTL changes until the next billing cycle. I've tested with both TTL 66 and 68, and still seem to be using hotspot data sometimes for both. I'm thinking that might be caused by the VPN that some of my devices are on like Windscribe or Nord, but I'll need to do more testing.

Check out these two posts with the formatted code from the original poster.
https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=155908042&postcount=2578

You'll need to change the IP address 192.168.12.1 in the script to match your specific T-Mobile gateway. You can find the default gateway IP by running this command manually from Putty.
Code:
ip route
The output will show something like this for the KDV21 (which I have).
Code:
default via 192.168.12.1 dev eth0
You can run this command in Putty while connected to your router to see the rules (as the original poster mentioned).
Code:
iptables -vL -t mangle
If you run this command and use the script that writes to the logs, you can see the output.
Code:
service restart_firewall
On the Asus router, go to the System Log, clear it out, then run the above command you'll see something like this:
Code:
Apr 4 15:34:36 rc_service: service 28796:notify_rc restart_firewall
Apr 4 15:34:38 custom_script: Running /jffs/scripts/firewall-start (args: eth0)
Apr 4 15:34:38 admin: Set TTL for KVD21
This is the script I'm running on mine since I have multiple devices used for testing. (Note I haven't tested the USB connection part of the script yet). BTW, I used WinSCP to edit my scripts (personal preference).

Code:
#!/bin/sh
set -x

# Apply missing setting.
modprobe xt_HL
modprobe xt_hl

# Main Rule.
check_home_internet () {
	DEFAULT_ROUTE=$(ip route | awk '/default/ {print $3}')

	if [ "$DEFAULT_ROUTE" = 192.168.12.1 ]
	then
echo "Set TTL 66 for KVD21"
		iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j TTL --ttl-set 66
		ip6tables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j HL --hl-set 66
		logger "Set TTL for KVD21"
	elif [ "$DEFAULT_ROUTE" = 192.168.56.1 ]
	then
echo "Set TTL 66 for MR6400"
		iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j TTL --ttl-set 66
		ip6tables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j HL --hl-set 66
		logger "Set TTL for MR6400"
	else
echo "Apply TTL 65 for all other (66 for USB)."
		iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j TTL --ttl-set 65
		ip6tables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j HL --hl-set 65
		iptables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -o usb0 -j TTL --ttl-set 66
logger "Apply TTL for all other."
	fi
}

Thank you ... extremely helpful feedback! I'll poke around with the commands you sent to confirm all is well but there's half a chance I have everything setup correctly at this point and I just need to wait until the next billing cycle to confirm (if everything going forward for this current billing cycle is going to be slow no matter what I do).

edit: turns out "iptables -vL -t mangle" shows that my firewall rules aren't being run when the router turns on. If I run the "firewall-rules" script manually and then re-run the "iptables" command, at that point I'm able to see the TTL rules. Billing cycle ends in 6 days so I'll go frustrate myself again in a week!

edit2: after running "firewall-rules" manually then plugging in the 5G gateway into the Merlin router, I'm back to full speed data! In the past, I would have to ssh/http to the Asus router without it connected to the 5G gateway otherwise I couldn't access the Asus router. And then after plugging in the ethernet port to the 5G gateway, the Asus router would complain it was still not connected. But it worked this time and all appears good except for figuring out why my jffs "firewall-rules" script isn't being run on boot.

While connected to the router, I can access both the Gateway and the router itself.

If I recall, I had to reboot the router too. Maybe if I waited long enough without rebooting, it would recognize the new internet connection eventually.

Not familiar with your Merin setup but just a couple of quick observations that may/may not help:

While connected to the router, I can access both the Gateway and the router itself.
Just wanted to reply again to both of you that I *highly* appreciate the feedback/suggestions and my edited reply in post 5076 follow-ups that it's all sorta working now. I'm consuming high speed data now so the rules appear to work. In the edited post, I mention that I have to run the "firewall-rules" script manually before I see the TTL rules with "iptables -vL -t mangle" so I just now need to figure out why that isn't being executed automatically on the asus router on boot. So I'm almost there.

Edit: and of course everything now magically works even after the Asus router reboot even though I didn't change anything! Go figure.

Which Gateway are you using? I just bought a KVD21 on eBay and am curious if I can get it setup with just the Gateway or if I need to add a secondary wifi router to pull data over hotspot.

These are the latest R7000 FW:
R7000-V1.0.11.136_10.2.120.chk
R7000-V1.0.11.136_10.2.120.zip

Yeah, I paid about that much for the cudy. I have to restart it once in a while, but otherwise working pretty good

The Nokia 5G21. You do need a secondary router to not pull hotspot data.
