Personally this is my number one pick for laptops. It runs cool compared to most SSDs and especially and gen4. Great choice for your laptop.
Why would you choose this over P31 for a laptop? This draws 30-50% more power than the P31, based on every review I've seen. I love Samsung SSDs but I'm super curious how this is a better option for a laptop.
I don't know why you got downvoted for asking a question lol. But I have the sabarent tool-free enclosure and it works great. very easy to swap drives out as well. it's like 20$ on amazon.

I should've clarified that I haven't looked at every ssd possible. There's just too many. But I would still pick Samsung 980 for just the very reason that Samsung produce really good SSDs. When it comes to manufacturing SSDs I put a lot of weight on who's making it because the testing and QA is crucial to the product. I remember HP SSD suddenly lost data for no reason at all.
But I do agree that if you don't mind SK, then that SSD runs much cooler and much better for a laptop. Thanks for pointing that out.

This is the Samsung drive NOT to buy. It's DRAM-less. Wait for the 970 Evo Plus (which has sold the 2tb for $130) if you must have Samsung and want a Gen3 drive. The 980 is fine if you really want a drive right now and only want Samsung.

I agree with most of your points - I, too, mainly run Samsung SSDs, but the post a few entries down (from Shouthouse) isn't wrong, either. I think it's suspect for Samsung not to mark this as a 'Lite' or 'QVO' or some other moniker to indicate it's DRAMless.

I just bought the 970 Evo plus myself, however, it runs a lot hotter than 980 and the speed difference is negligible in my opinion. I would worry about putting 970 Evo plus in a laptop, it seems it'll run at 50-65C in idle and kicks up to 70C during usage. That's in desktop environment. 980 is DRAM-less but uses CPU to regain the performance and likes to stay in 40-60C temperature, I see nothing wrong with that. DRAM is only worth it for the goal of being significantly more performant but that isn't really the case here but you'll gain a much cooler SSD because of it.

True. Context matters. Our family uses them in desktop computers for OS and game caching, and with (4) 140mm fans in my desktop alone, cooling isn't even a factor.
My work-issued ultrabook thermal throttles just from a virus scan, so that use case would be much more sensitive, just as you've noted.

Yes absolutely and to be fair, I'm actually going to try and put the 970 EVO Plus in my laptop and going to observe the temps and if it's too high start looking at what options I have to cool it down. I'm looking into thermal pad and some sort of thin (copper?) plate. If it still gets pretty hot, I will probably switch out for my 1TB that's in my desktop but I was really close to buying the 980 because of the very reason it runs cool but the $130 2TB deal was just too good to ignore.
