I bought a refurbished one 3 weeks ago and can confirm the lid is aluminum. Feels really nice actually. Gives it a MacBook feel but at 1/5 the cost. The bottom portion, however, is plastic
Going from previous units, the aluminum will give it some much needed rigidity when it's closed at least.

Does it have a backlit keyboard or touchscreen? I don't see that listed anywhere or on GW's site. Their site is pretty bad/basic. This is a hell of a deal though.

I don't think it has a touchscreen from some random site reviews I have found.

I cant find a driver page for future use on their site either. It just loads the spec page when you hit "driver downloads".
no touchscreen, no backlight. It's a basic laptop with good basic specs.

According to ETA, its not NVME but its 330 bucks. You can also ADD another SSD drive up to 2 TB (and replace the current one if you wanted).

He ups the performance by changing the TDP power wattages to 30w from 15w. Looks pretty decent.
Yes but doing this decreases the life cycle of the battery. But if you need the extra performance at least you have this option.

I assume a budget Realtek wifi card - integrated or not?

I guess a key PLUS here is 11th gen versions can power the laptop via usb-c?

The HP 15.6" i3-1125? Plus for HP: 2 RAM slots if you want big memory for whatever reason, NVMe gen.3 drive support, comes with intel Wifi 6 card.

Gateway here: Faster processor and maybe better screen that is aluminum backed.

So Processor vs RAM/NVMe. I'll call the screen a push since besides the quality there is a size difference.

OH - big plus to Gateway for not hiding screws under adhesive rubber strips like HP LOVES to do.

edit: Gateway has a 25% bigger batter than the HP.

Yes ETA says that but doesnt say how much it decreased. I was thinking/assuming if you up the TDP, it would still run a lower power until it needed the entire 30w so theoretically it would last the same amount unless you were pushing the laptop performance. Let me know if you find something documented between the two power options regarding battery life.

Does anyone know if 30w is the highest you can go i.e. 45w is not achievable, etc.?

What size SSD does this take (not capacity, the form factor, 2280)? I was going to look up SSD's to add to this and want to make sure it's the right kind.

If the BIOS is unlocked as the reviewer says, you should be able to crank it higher - not that it can do that for very long because of the cooling solution. But intel chips often have very high transitory power peaks if the manufacturers let it happen. Even then at some point the Bios eventually limits it anyway regardless of what you enter.

Considering the Wifi card is soldered, the 512GB is a SSD - no NVMe, and the RAM is soldered, you never need to open the back of the laptop up.

If you do want extra storage, the have the spare drive access hatch. That's got to be worthwhile to keep you from dicking around.

It's a work machine and use it as such and don't spend money on it.

I got this refurb recently but I'm returning it - I can't deal with the screen. Speakers are also terrible, but everything else is acceptable.
