Rearview radar provides awareness of vehicles approaching from behind up to 153 yards (140 meters) away
Pairs with your Edge bike computer and compatible smartphone as well as select Garmin wearables or the radar display unit
When used with your compatible smartphone, the Varia app provides graphics — plus tone and vibration alerts — to indicate approaching cars
When used with a compatible smartphone, Varia radar integrates with third-party apps such as Ride with GPS to overlay your maps with rearview radar alerts
Compact vertical design mounts easily to most road-use bicycles

Rep for a cycling deal - but I have the Varia with the taillight and if you're thinking about just the radar, spring for the full radar/taillight combo when it's on sale as the blinking lights vary as cars come closer to your bike.
I agree. I also have the combo and can't imagine riding without it now. It works phenomenally well.
100% agree. I truly believe this device saves lives. The radar does a great job at alerting you of approaching cars but without the blinking tail light you aren't alerting cars of YOUR presence. Now that I have it I will never ride without one.

Looks like Best Buy has sold out already. However, it appears to be a Garmin MAP directed sale as it is $99 almost everywhere now, including Garmin, REI, etc.
Hope this means Garmin's announcing some cool new gear at Sea Otter, or some radar competition. I'm holding out for the better battery life of the 515.

is there one that works with phone or watch? or is that not necessary as audible clue is enough?
while i dont ride in traffic, for some reason this radar has been on my radar for a long time..

The Varia will work with a phone app. It also works with various Garmin watches and bike computers. I used the phone app on Android initially. Worked great but I was a little uneasy with the phone baking in the sun on long rides. I now use it with a Garmin edge 130 plus. It's not as legible on the 130 given the screen size compared to a phone but still very usable.

Watch isn't good enough - I have the radar and a garmin watch but only use this with my bike computer because it shows you how close and fast the car is coming up to you on it. Phone app actually shows best but problem is it kills the battery pretty fast and my typical rides are +3 hrs so it wouldn't last for me.
Edit: I agree with others that the light/radar combo is best and I'd hold off on this & get that. Reason I got this instead is I already own a couple cygolite 350 lights (which are one of the brightest rear lights on market) and wanted to keep using them.
Have this and am pleased with it. Even on the best sale I have seen combo has been +$50. Limited area that I mount it in and taillights already available so no need. for the combo. Ordered mine from a LBS in New York last time a deal came up and got it tax and shipping free. Works well with my Roam.
I love this radar. I have the tail light version (RT515) which I HIGHLY recommend. I don't ride without it. I consider it almost as essential as a helmet.

Word has it that the combo has better battery life as well.
