This has a way different use case versus an iPad. If you're an avid reader, it's much easier on your eyes to read on a glare-free screen. Plus, you ever try to read on an iPad outside in the sun?

The focus of the kindle is to read books. If you're trying to do other stuff like play games, browse the internet, or stream something, then yeah, just use an iPad. But if you want to read digital books in an experience as close to a physical book as possible, then a kindle is for you. It's small, lightweight, and can carry hundreds, if not thousands, of books in one device.

I've been waiting to see if the paperwhite went on sale. Is the screen quality a big difference between this and the paperwhite? I know what the spec differences are but does anyone have real world experience with both than can say the paperwhite is vastly better?

Amazon dropped the base Kindle down to $5 off the lowest price in the last year. Seems easy to legitimately remove ads too with Amazon chat using a variety of reasons.

The kids version with a basic case/cover and w/o ads is $10 more.

Mind sharing what reason Amazon chat will accept to remove ads? Got in on the Kindle deal last month for $40 all in and am hoping to jumpstart what had been a prolific bibliophile addiction up until H.S.

I suggest buying a refurb Paperwhite if you want a kindle under $50, it has a light, and DOUBLE the ppi, which is the most important aspect for how good text looks on the display.

Don't get the basic Kindle. EVER.

Paperwhite 3 (2015) is better in every way except that it has 4GB of storage which is only a problem if you read a lot of graphic novels (though still, the 300ppi of the paperwhite actually makes graphic novels readable, on the kindle base model they look like trash and you cant read small text at 167ppi) oh also, the battery is TWICE the size.
Get one refurb or used for ~$40

Paperwhite 4 (2018) is actually better in every way with 8 or 32gb of storage and it's waterproof.
Get one refurb or used ~$70

Yeah. I have a basic Kindle, since Woot had referb ones for $35 a while back, and I wasn't sure I'd use it enough. I definitely regret not just getting the paper white. The regular ones suck. The only good thing was that mine happened to be one without ads.

There's no need to stress about the ads. They only appear when you are not reading a book.

Now if they were obtrusive and frequent ads like on the Echo Show, then stress.

I'd love to get one of these, but they don't support epub files.

Just FYI for those that want deal history, Target had a deal for 2 of these for $70 a few weeks back. Combined with the $40 red card coupon deal, that made it even better. I'm not even sure if it's the ads model they were selling (I haven't opened them), but again, just FYI.

They don't support epub? That's such a common file type for ereaders. That stinks.

great to enter kindle reading. 167ppi hasn't stopped me from reading. i read everyday. its not undreadable. and the led light intensity can be increased or reduced 1-15 but i keep it between 1-4. i dont need that much. and its cool light which i think is only drawback. paperback has warm led.
if u get used paperwhite go for it. if not get this, start reading. thats the most important thing. no need to be gearhead. the thing i miss is 2 buttons for turning page on either side so that u can do 1 hand operation.
