I've tried using these stakes and variations of them without any success. They just litter the yard eventually and ant populations are unaffected.

What worked for me is Taurus SC [diypestcontrol.com]. It's expensive but one bottle should last you for years as it's highly concentrated. (Add about 1 ounce to a gallon sprayer; the bottle auto measures)

Spray around the perimeter of the house and where ants like to congregate outdoors. In about 2 weeks the ants will be gone.

Taurus SC is the best product I've tried to keep insects out of my home. It brings a tear to my cheap basterd eye thinking how much money I spent trying inferior products over the years; I guess lessons don't come cheap laugh out loud
Please be very careful with this stuff. Fipronil is especially deadly to all social insects, including beneficial ones like bees. The "transfer effect" can be devastating for honey bees.
Even if that works, it will only kill some of the worker ants. The colony will raise more ants to replace them, and the gum will have no long-term effect. To control ants, you need to kill the queen. Which involves workers taking the bait back to the colony, where it's used to feed others including the queen.

Active ingredient in Taurus SC is Fipronil
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fipronil
http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/fipronil.html

Active ingredient in AMDRO is Hydramethylnon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydramethylnon
http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/hydragen.pdf

Active ingredient in Terro is Borax, which is the mildest of the three.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borax
http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/boricgen.html

I think that's too much borax. I tried that ratio before and the ants just avoided it. As in I put a few drops of it directly in the path of an ant trail which went over porcelain tiles (so it wouldn't absorb the water). A few of them investigated it, but when I checked an hour later the ant trail just wait around the bait.

Yes Terro is a borax mix. But I spent a couple years mixing my own batches of borax and sugar water, and coming up with all sorts of contraptions to place it around the yard in ways where it wouldn't spill, leaves couldn't get into it, and the dog wouldn't lap it all up.

That's when I realized out that Terro isn't just a borax mix. It's also a dispenser which holds the borax mix inside. A custom-made dispenser which is far more convenient and elegant than the jerry-rigged dispensers I was trying to make. I now consider the price of these Terro boxes to be the price of the dispenser, and refill them with my own borax solution when they run dry.

Is this the stuff that also super toxic to cats and dogs?
Main active ingredient in Taurus SC is Fipronil [google.com]. Fipronil is a commonly used pesticide in flea treatments for cats [amazon.com].

As long as the treated outdoor area is dry, Taurus SC is safe for pets. Just don't get the idea of spraying animal bedding or directly on pets though. It's an outdoor product; never use it inside.

I've heard good things about Bifen but I have never tried it. I've had excellent results with Taurus SC however.

Taurus SC also kills many other insects and you are in essence creating a virtual wall/barrier around your home when using it. I spray in late April then again late July and I don't see ants at all anymore for over 2 years now.

Taurus SC seems expensive at first but a 20 ounce bottle should last you for over 3 years. (My bottle is about half gone and I'm on my third year of using it). Ergo, it is the most long-term cost effective solution IMO.

I live in Maine and spray twice a year (Late April and late July) and it has resolved my ant problem and then some. I also spray around the eaves of my roof where I noticed wasp and hornet nest 2 years before.

The results have been remarkable; for over 2 years now my home has been ant and wasp/hornet free. I also had some lady and elder bugs in the spring inside my home but that stopped since I started spraying with Taurus SC

Just make sure you respect the power and toxicity of Taurus SC. Don't spray indoor areas, attics or basements. Wear protective eyewear, gloves and a N95 mask. Never spray on a windy day and avoid spraying near flowering plants that rely on pollination from bees as it will kill them and their hives.

Say no more, I've been buying everything you can imagine from a big box store and nothing is working, including these OP bait things, I've had them in a week and the ants appear to be on steroids now in this heat. Just yesterday I thought I need to go commercial strength.

Ps. Used discount code MEMORIAL for an extra $5.00 off the diypestcontrol site this morning.

Going to try your refill the stations idea for around the pool. Tired of making my own ugly diy "old sour cream plastic tray" stations. Hope these are easy to refill and I'll experiment with the ratio of borax, powdered sugar & water to see what works best
Refills are easier with the larger Terro traps.

While these Terro stake traps can be refilled, you'll probably need an eye dropper.

Yes as long as it doesn't rain within 48hrs after applying it. This also applies to sprinklers if they reach the area you applied it to.

Thanks! I applied it and it didn't rain for at least 4-5 days and I turned off the sprinklers during that time, so it sounds like I should be good. So far I haven't seen many ants around my foundation.

Careful at Walmart they scanned $4.99 but the register rang up $7.99 which they corrected. Just did not want anyone paying full price by mistake.

Refill them with borax and simple syrup mixture every month or two. It's great.

How are you managing to refill these things? The plastic container that has the liquid bait in it appears to be a one-time use tear-off deal. Are you just rinsing that inside container out and filling it with borax/simple syrup?

I've had very good luck with these traps and small black ants. I place the traps roughly evenly spaced along the outside premier of the house, especially in the areas I've battle with the black ants before, making sure the opening of them are nudged up against the side of my house and facing the concrete foundation. I just gathered up and threw away the 8 I placed about a month in a half ago and 5 or 6 of them had a bunch of dead black ants in them. I'm in central Florida and this is the first year so far in a long time, that I haven't had to battle with the black ants getting in the patio area. Seems to be keeping them out and working good. For $5, I'm really impressed.

Just put it in a bottle with a squeeze top. Squirt it into the hole.

It's more cost effective just to use spray, plus it gets rid of other pests besides ants.

If you are trying to kill outdoor ants forming ant hills, the only thing you should use is the Ortho white powder. This will last a decade or more if you do it right. Walk around the yard every week or so in the active times (spring/summer/after rain) and catch the hills when they are small. You can put 1/4 a teaspoon worth if that, almost nothing, and wipe it out in 15 minutes. No more broadcasting pesticides in my yard every year -can't believe I did that.
