Thanks - I get mine tomorrow and will try with AT&T and update here as well. New to this - anyone have any unlocking services they recommend? TIA
I don't believe the poster followed my complete instruction. You need a sim active on a post paid plan to activate the phone on att so that they can unlock it. You can't just give att any imei number that wasn't previously activated on their network. My post prior to the one that was quoted clearly states this instruction.
I just got my phone today and it's completely unlocked. I tried AT&T and Tmobile and both worked flawlessly. Checked the warranty and it showed 5/26/23
Did you request any unlock from att? or was it unlocked from factory

My plan was to activate on ATT and ask them to unlock but when I put the T-Mobile sim I realized it got the network bar and did not asked for activation so I made a call and it worked. I did not request any unlock, it was already factory unlocked. Hope this helps

I agree, I unlocked more than 4 phones before with AT&T using their automated system. In order to unlock with ATT you must activate the phone with ATT sim. You cannot activate the phone with T-Mobile or other carriers and ask ATT to unlock it. As I stated before this IPhone 12 was factory unlocked for me and I did not have to do any of those steps to get it unlocked, but this was my initial plan while purchasing

Can you check the carrier lock status in your settings please? I got mine and it works on my Metro Sim card but the carrier lock says it's locked sim. I don't have access to any other Sim Cards to check it.

This is weird, it says its locked to AT&T and i used AT&T sim to activate at the beginning but its working on T-Mobile!
You can check which carrier it locked to probably for your case it will be metro pcs - put your imei to below website https://imeicheck.com/imei-check
I'm still waiting for my phone to arrive. I plan on using it with Visible Wireless which is a wholly owned Subsidiary of Verizon Wireless. On a previous Model I purchased from Visible directly it was unlocked immediately but I know they've changed that policy.
How do I determine if my phone is US Flex Policy restricted and will it lock to Visible Wireless or be Unlocked because of the carrier type? I don't plan on using it with an alternate carrier but I would like the option if travel overseas,
All this stuff is so frustrating and confusing I don't understand why they implement this policies.

I just requested with AT&T to unlock, i will keep you posted. if this unlock works for me than you should activate this phone with an AT&T/Verizon sim and buy iphone unlock service from eBay. I would personally activate it with AT&T cause i unlocked couple phone using eBay unlock service and its cheap. only 99 cents to 2 dollar. i would avoid activating on visible or third party phone service provider as they have strict unlock policy than ATT, Verizon or T-Mobile

Yup this link also shows it's locked to Metro. This can create trouble down the line if someone wants to switch or sell the phone.

You can request metro pcs to unlock this iPhone. You don't owe them anything so they should unlock it without any issues. I know metropcs unlocks their prepaid iPhones after 180 days of active service.
Activated on t mobile and it shows sim locked to t mobile now. Tried with a Verizon sim and it shows needs to be unlocked. This is false advertising I would say if it gets locked to the network we activate on initially...

I received my package from VIPoutlet today, and like others have reported in this thread the device is showing Sim Locked and US Flex Policy Carrier. I reached out to VIPoutlet prior to receipt and asked for confirmation of the SIM and Carrier Status. I was assured by the representative multiple times the device was unlocked. I'm awaiting a reply from VIPoutlet as to a course of action and if not agreeable I will return the phone. I have no desire to go through a bunch of hoops just to save $200 off normal pricing.
I get so frustrated with Apple and all these unpublished and difficult circumstances revolving their products. It used to be related only to repair but now its even prior to ownership.
Prior to modifying the phone's status I would reach out to VIPoutlet and get a course of action. Unless you have exhausted all avenues through the seller and eBay I wouldn't change the status of the phone sim or carrier lock. Take screen shot and photos and save your correspondence. CC dispute will usually work in your favor as well if you have sufficient documentation.

I can also confirm the phone is a US Reseller Flex Policy, as my phone just arrived today and I was able to run the IMEI. I plan on using my GF's T-Mobile sim to activate then use my Metro sim to run the phone, and I'll go through T-Force or an unlock service to unlock it eventually. But the phone will work fine with whatever sim you first insert into it. Blame really falls on Apple for being such an anti-consumer friendly company, you don't see this with Android phones, they are either locked or unlocked, no inbetween like Schrodinger's iPhone here.
