It is SMR so it has slower write speeds.
Not great for anything other than a backup drive, not a main boot drive.
It depends on what's your use case. For most regular home users whose use case is to store the files, it doesn't matter. But if you are planning to run something off it - I would 'recommend' CMR. But it costs at least 50% more.

I think These are OEM drives. so no warranty other than from Amazon and seller. but still a great deal for some cheap mass storage.

Sold through and shipped by Amazon and the description says 2 years? You seeing something different?

Does SMR/CMR matter if you're just using to run media off of (via a plex server)?

Slow write, but read speeds are fine, if you don't move the data around it's okay.

Any chance of 8tb or higher around 100 or so this year. Trying to go bigger as I replace all my older 4tb out.

Were WD Blue drives always SMR? For some reason, I thought they weren't.
The 8GB (5640 RPM) version is CMR (model number WD80EAZZ).

Here's a spec sheet directly from WD's website where you can compare all the blue drives (it will download a PDF when you click the link):

I just bought it for about $97 a few days ago directly from WD. You need the 15% recycling promo code and Paypal's 12% CB. They already shipped my HD's out. Paypal confirmed the CB.

How many recycling code can you do per household?

I would like to use this as an external drive, but I need to protect it's content. Any recommendation on best way or practices?

Since it has a 2 year warranty and a really good price, I ended up buying 3 to replace some really old <2TB drives. Thanks, op!

SMR drives are crazy slow and unresponsive. The biggest let down for me is when I want to go look at some archived photos or videos and it takes like 5-10 seconds to actually populate and show the mini previews. They can transfer speeds upto 200mbps which is it's only saving grace. But they are nice as a running archive drive for those files you don't need all the time but on occasion or want to copy back over to your SSD for a project

What if you put them in Raid5 or 10? That should increase the writing speed?

WD40EZRZ this model is CMR but not on sale.

Whew...

wd40ezrx this model is CMR, green version

bummer...good price. Good for a backup data drive rather than a peformance drive where you need high write speeds.

May I recommend this 7200RPM drive that is CMR....yes, more money...wait for sale.

I dunno. I have the 2TB version of this drive singular. But raid generally only improves the raw read write speeds. That doesn't improve the 4kb random write speeds. That's what's responsible for your responsiveness.
