A smart home needs 3 things to operate: 1. Smart home products like bulb, plugs, these sensors, etc 2. A physical "hub" that communicates with those products 3. Software that lets you easily communicate with the hub.

Hubitat makes a hub (Elevation) and the software that runs on it. It's a brand. Zooz makes products and the hub and the software. Zooz is also a brand. Smartthings is another brand. Philips Hue. Monoprice. Home Assistant is not exactly a brand, it's software you run yourself on a hub you build yourself. Etc.

Usually a smart home device can communicate with a hub if the communication protocol is the same—the 3 biggies are zigbee, z-wave, and of course, wifi ('matter' is supposed to be another one soon but nothing yet).

A simple start may be to grab a cheap wifi plug or bulb and set it up to start thinking about what you want in your smart home.

(This is overly simplified.) Hubitat is one of several brands that make a "hub" that devices will connect to. "Elevation" is just a model/marketing word, doesn't really mean anything. "Zooz" is one of many brands that makes home automation devices. If you find a product that uses z-wave or zigbee, they generally can connect to a Hubitat hub to be controlled. In the most typical usage, your hub is the single master coordinator for all of your devices. You control and configure your hub and its connected devices through a webpage.

You'll learn faster by actually using it, so just jump in. A hub and a couple devices will get you started. Grab the latest "Hubitat Elevation" hub and two Zooz ZEN15 Power Switches. Going through the process of setting that up will be the best crash course.

Also my understanding is that ring system will take most z-wave devices, but because it's not ring approved, it will only notify you that the sensor is being opened/closed, but it will not trigger alarm as Ring would not want to be responsible for faulty 3rd party sensors setting off alarms.
