Agreed! I've actually been waiting for one to go on sale at a decent price. Importing medical records (had to do that for a second opinion recently), burning classic games for CD based consoles, ripping CDs and DVDs for Plex, etc. Just because people don't do these things doesn't mean other people don't have very valid and frequent uses for things. I'm glad some people on here see that rather than threadcrap on other people's purchases and posts.

$20 at Target with free shipping and 5% off. With Red card. Not the greatest reviews though.

Originally they were separated for multi-format drives, but later they introduced a hybrid laser diode for mass production that could do both, abeit not nearly as well as separate diodes that emitted only the original designed wavelengths. This could easily be part of the problem you're having, the hybrids can do both, but neither very well. You don't really have to worry about the diodes to be honest, the drive will have some other mechanical electrical failure long before the diode becomes an issue.
Agreed, most of the my past optical drives primary failure was the ability to eject the tray when empty to load disks, eventually evolved into not being able to eject the tray at all empty or loaded. I resorted to having a paper clip on hand at all times to manually open the tray. It retracted the tray just fine and read from and wrote to disks just fine. It was just the eject function that always failed first no matter the drive manufacturer or model.

Not discounting any use cases but I'd be surprised if you didn't at least have a 720p/1080p TV, in which case, bluray could still be a better fit.
I used to do this, but I even started migrating my DVD collection and family home movies to a raid 1 NAS and a run my entire house and parent's home media vida plex and fire tv sticks and chromecasts dongles. Don't forget also that physical disk media can actually degrade over time as well and eventually can become unreadable.

I still do... to scare the birds off of my fruit trees! Doesn't work 100% but in my area seems to greatly help.

Slightly off-topic - Does any recommend a PC case with room for an internal DVD drive?
Antec DP502 Flux at Newegg, about a hundred bucks. Been using Antec cases for about 30 years.

Does this come with Burn Proof or some sort of buffer underrun protection. Don't want no coasters.

Damn, I did not hear that. So what is the point of going to BB now.
