Pretty good deal on this external CD/DVD drive. The last deal on this was $5.00 higher.

them good old days buying the 100-packs CD-R and DVD-R blank discs. The memories!
Agreed! I've actually been waiting for one to go on sale at a decent price. Importing medical records (had to do that for a second opinion recently), burning classic games for CD based consoles, ripping CDs and DVDs for Plex, etc. Just because people don't do these things doesn't mean other people don't have very valid and frequent uses for things. I'm glad some people on here see that rather than threadcrap on other people's purchases and posts.
$20 at Target with free shipping and 5% off. With Red card. Not the greatest reviews though.

Just picked this up. The software was worth the price and the hardware is nice, compact, quiet. Was disappointed in the drive having Micro-USB interface, but will probably just keep the included cable attached to prevent failure.

Asus makes an all USB-C model, but it only retails in EMEA. The rest on Amazon are hybrid connections outputted to USB-C.

The quest to rid the world of microUSB hits another snag

The only reason I need one is to burn movies to DVD for use in our 10 year old minivan for the kids to watch. But even that use is getting less frequent as long as we plan ahead for trips I can download the iTunes file to our iPad. This is one product I can't see spending over $60 on - even though I have boxes of unused blank discs.

I was just shopping for an external optical drive! Didn't realize the existence of such devices would cause so much hostility. Weird. Anyway, I need an inexpensive one and there's a Best Buy nearby, so thanks OP!

Oof. I'm genuinely surprised that people are still using optical media.
The last time I bought a USB CD / DVD+ drive was in 2008 when I bought two external drives for $14 each. They were on clearance on NewEgg because even back then people weren't buying them anymore and new it was getting rid of the majority of their CD/DVD/DL inventories.

I bought 3 cases of 4x100 spool discs of dynex brand dual layer DVDs from Best buy years and years(maybe 16 years?) ago during a Black Friday sale. I think they were $20 each? Despite giving six spools away to friends and family, and using them at almost every chance I could, I still only went barely through three spools (downloading Linux isos!) before the technology became obsolete.

With the price, speed and functionality of newer storage devices like USB 3.0 nvme, I can't imagine taking the time to put data on to a CD, label and then store it. If you're looking for archival storage, it's actually much better and much more reliable to store data redundantly on a mirrored partition platter hard drive, or mirrored on multiple drives with parity recovery.

If you were going to put stuff on it to give to someone, with internet speeds being what they are today, it's probably faster for somebody to simply download the same 650 MB-4.5 GB directly.

Who uses these drives and optical media today? What do you do with them?

Edit: those who thumb down are old and unable to deal with change. 🤣

Update: Oooooooollllllll..d

Teachers need these since teacher editions of textbooks still come with DVDs for supplemental materials.

Those who are questioning their usage are probably paying Google and Apple $3-$10/month to store their data 😞

Huh? How do I know? Electro-biological activity within my cerebellum.
Please forgive the snide remark but that's a rude manner in which to solicit knowledge.
I might have been apt to share, but what do you know? I lack compassion for impolite fools.

Sorry man I didn't mean to be rude maybe you didn't get me. I am asking how do you know about the ASUS UsB C model in Europe EMEA region did you stay there or have some friend buy genuinely curious nothing to know about your source etc. and that why I asked about cost of that UsB c model as micro usb sucks and is dated hope you now understand what I meant. I should have posted bit more to avoid misunderstanding

How fast does it need to be? It ain't gonna get close to maxing out the theoretical speed of USB2.0.

Let me tell u about target refund experience.. even with proof of ups tracking + photo.. target chose to decline my refund AFTER their special team reviewed. Raised hell until someone lower gave me gift card. Never again.. that 5% red card locks in their ability to decline customer refunds.

Just a get Blu-ray burner. Cost more now, but will be much more convenient to back data up. I still archive all my photos onto discs. Started with CDs, DVDs, and now Blu-Ray. Store your discs properly and they last a lifetime.
