Pretty good deal on this external CD/DVD drive. The last deal on this was $5.00 higher.

them good old days buying the 100-packs CD-R and DVD-R blank discs. The memories!
Agreed! I've actually been waiting for one to go on sale at a decent price. Importing medical records (had to do that for a second opinion recently), burning classic games for CD based consoles, ripping CDs and DVDs for Plex, etc. Just because people don't do these things doesn't mean other people don't have very valid and frequent uses for things. I'm glad some people on here see that rather than threadcrap on other people's purchases and posts.
$20 at Target with free shipping and 5% off. With Red card. Not the greatest reviews though.

Here's one helpful usage for this drive: it has a special mode which LG calls 'TV mode' which when enabled will allow the playing an audio CD in cars that lack a CD player but are capable of playing audio files on an USB flash drive. In 'TV mode' it'll quickly scans an inserted CD and build a virtual flash drive that you can then listen to with car's track selection control. This special mode is unique to LG external USB drives.

For those, like me, who'd prefer a mini-USB rear connector the older LG models GP50NB40 & GP65NS60 that are available at Microcenter for $4 & $6 more respectively also has this capability. I own a GP65NS60 to use in my car as I found it to be the best of the three models.
I tried this but my car still couldn't read the cd.

Just a get Blu-ray burner. Cost more now, but will be much more convenient to back data up. I still archive all my photos onto discs. Started with CDs, DVDs, and now Blu-Ray. Store your discs properly and they last a lifetime.

85 USD from Best Buy
Blu Ray Burner [ebay.com]

I am not willing to believe the archival quality argument anymore as I have countless CDRs which have experienced 'laser-rot" with the label side (the part where the actual dye is located) is starting to rot and lift from the plastic disc from the outside in.

Most of my DVD+Rs are fine, but I anticipate that it is just a matter of time. Maybe BD M-DISC actually does what it says in lasting 100+ years, but they are cost prohibitive.

The only truly bullet proof media that I've used is magneto-optical discs (that each barely held 140 megs?)

Unfortunately you must activate 'TV mode' each time you supply power to the drive (e.g., starting the car) which is accomplished by pressing Eject button to eject the tray and then pressing it again for two seconds. The green light will then stay on showing the drive is now in 'TV Mode.' Also your car must have the capability of reading flash drives with audio files.
