To be fair, R5 3580U is on Zen+ architecture, which was introduced back in 2018. Intel's 10th gen was introduced back in 2019 (AMD's Zen 2 was also introduced in 2019). So, you are basically comparing a year older architecture to Intel.
From Intel's 4th gen all the way to 9th gen, the incremental improvement was 2-5% in each generation; AMD was "asleep". Then AMD came out with the Zen (Ryzen) architecture, and things (both Intel and AMD) started to have 10%+ incremental improvement per generation. Maybe that's why you are hearing "if it's not new, it's garbage".
Any opinion on this posted deal vs this 3700U elitebook for $50 less? My thoughts are that it would mainly come down to: screen preference (15 vs 14) as well as touch, and feel of the surface vs upgradeability/repairability of the hp.

Oh no, how come did I missed that? Already got the Intel one lol.
Is there any other difference? Both come with 2 years warranty
Oh look at this Ryzen, i7, i5, Nvidia laptop! Such a deal.
This junk old af.
It's also not $1000. Yes don't expect 5000 series Ryzen performance. But for the money, doesn't look like a bad deal.
Surface laptop's have one of the best screens, 3:2 aspect ratio, software updates, good brand name for resale and likely to find replacement parts.

Actually, this looks like a fantastic deal. obviously, if you're in this price range you're not looking for the best of the best. this is a great config and hardware setup as a basic machine imo
U think the AMD one will be noticable slower than the Intel one?
I also have a HP docking station. I'm courious to know if it will be compatible with it.

12nm vs 14nm / TPD15W vs 45W ( battery power consumption ) / Radeon RX Vega 9 vs HD630 are all very "negotialble". QA should be pending on manufactures, not CPU itself per se.... I have both SL1 and SL3, I honestly don't have any issue with them, consider my SL1 is really old..
p.s. about alcantara surface is quite comfortable, wear and tears? hmm... it really depends on personal hygiene... my 5 years old SL1 ( grey one ) is literally same condition as my 2 year old SL3 ( Blue one )

pps: if you have the 15" SL3 AMD version, in mint condition and want to trade for mint 13.5" SL3 Intel i5-1035g7 / 8gb/256gb, also happen to live around Redmond WA area, msg me!

You should be Mr.NeverSweatyPalm 😎. I'm gonna ruin the Alcantara palm rest in a year.
Thanks for the info. I want to jump on this deal but my Legion y540 (i5 9300H) has been treating me well so far, can't justify getting another laptop. Oh, did I say I already have a work laptop AND another portable laptop just cuz......
