These can not be upgraded to Windows 11 (supported by MS).

How so? We aren't talking about a dual-CPU Sandy Bridge system with multiple GPUs here; this is a basic 6th gen with limited ad-ons. I wouldn't expect more than 20-25W average.

Assuming 25W average, that's less than $32/year running 24/7 at the US average 14.47 cents/kWh. You might be able to knock $20 a year off that number if you get a super power efficient 8W system, but I wouldn't call a delta of $0.05 a day costly. (Obviously this may change a bit for people in CA/AK/HI or the north east, but even then we're still only talking maybe $0.10/day.)

If you're interested in this, also check goodwill online. I have an i3-6100 based SFF machine I won in auction for ~ $50 recently.

Indeed great for home servers

Looking up some specs, I wonder why this site lists the max SATA hard drive to be limited to 1TB? Even considering this is a 6 year old computer, it should be able to support larger TB drives.

I have Optiplex at home. I installed 256Gb SSD and 4Tb HHD without problems. I also connected (temporary) a second 4Tb HHD instead of the CDROM to make a backup.

Otherwise, the PC is very quiet even after so many years and practically indestructible.

Is it worth upgrading the SSD to an M.2 drive? Newegg has a 500GB WD Blue on sale right now...
Depends on your application, but probably not. The M.2 on this MB is a half-width 3.0 x2 slot. It will still be ~4x faster than a SATA SSD, which may or may not be worth it to you.

Is this recommended to run Plex?
I've used a Optiplex 3040 for the past 2 years and it's been great. The 6500 in it can handle a 4k stream if you'd really like, and plenty of 1080p streams. Haven't had any complaints!

Can you upgrade the CPU on these?
Yes, it's LGA1151 (6th Generation Intel. -skylake), I'm guessing it would probably be okay with 7th Gen intel (kaby lake),.or whatever fits an LGA 1151 v1

Higher generation intels (9th, 10th, 11th) need an LGA 1200 socket.

If I wanted a machine to be able to play AAA games off of Steam, would the Dell or the Acer be the better option to go with?
Still need a GPU and I don't think they can fit a full GPU. Only a low profile GPU for 1080 gaming

This only has one NIC and no PCI slots to expand. USB NICs can be difficult from what I've read.
What are you talking about? These SFF units have a PCIe 3.0 x16 and an x1 slot for expansion. You're probably limited to single slot, HHHL cards, but that shouldn't be an issue for PCIe based NICs.

The Acer. It has a bigger PSU, can accept dual slot GPUs, and has a CPU that is four generations newer, and faster. That said, neither option gives you a great upgrade path though, and you'll be limited on GPU options.
The Acer has a 300W PSU vs 180W on the Dell, but at least you'll have room for a dual slot (although still HHHL) card.

Take a look at HP T620. It's perfect for pfSense and very power efficient.
And how about a link for one with two NICS?

Thank you, didn't know there were full vs. low-profile GPUs!
