This model gets some so so reviews, but this price is 5 dollars cheaper than the 4 inch. Please research before you commit so you understand how basic this finder is.

The "X" in the model indicates that this unit does not have map capabilities. Without a map the GPS is not very helpful. Also, these hook 2 models have push in connectors for the power and transducer cables. A lot of people have issues with these because the connections come loose or are not pushed in all the way to make a good contact.

Still a good price for a 7" unit.
The hook series with an x is junk... It's a great price for 7" and down imaging.. my thing is lowrance really made them sorry.

the lack of mapping is fine when you know the body of water. you can mark spots, Hazzards, and plot your course to get back where you came from. problem is the x series have a old processor and does not have a lot of memory. no split screen, the drawing is slow. every change in screen has to be redrawn... a big 7" screens should have split screen... the hook 7 without x has this. so, stay away from x

I would use this on a kayak or small boat. it's good for finding the depths and then fish. I would never put this on my bass boat. In fact I have a hook unit it hate now, lol! Id rather use a Garmin black and white unit over this thing.

Go Garmin for fun fish finders people.

Here's an altenative use-case for you folks:
- In offroad desert racing (ex: Baja), there's often a waypoint file that is shared by the race organizers to let you know that you remain on-course.
- As with anything labelled 'wedding', anything labeled "offroad" or "racing" automatically gets a serious $$ premium.

Example:
https://www.amazon.com/Lowrance-H...B07K7PTVZ3

The solution is to buy a fishfinder instead. I have the Hook 2 on our UTV and it worked flawlessly for all ~1300 miles of the Mexican 1000 a few years ago.
Considering all your doing is comparing where you are in relation to the next dot (like Pacman), it's not surprising that any basic unit will do.

PS. You don't need to install the sonar transducer unless you seriously mess up your navigation and want something to do while you wait to be rescued.

Somewhat unrelated, but I have the Garmin 73 SV on my boat with GPS and maps. It has helped me venture/discover/enjoy hidden coves that there is no way I would try going into without it as a newbie owner.

A good transducer/GPS for your boat will pay for itself in no time.

Depends on your use-case: if all you are doing is navigating from where you are now to the next waypoint every 1/8th of a mile (or whatever), it's good enough. You have other devices/SW (like LEADNAV) for better mapping.

My specific use-case was to determine, if I ran into an undocumented fork in the offroad trail at speed (basically up to 50mph as you'd only go faster on open flats and those were much more obvious), which one I should take based on the direction of the next waypoint relative to my current position. The GPS kept refreshing fast enough and was accurate enough.

Not junk, just a specialized use-case.

I think your bait may be the problem here.

Is this good for kayak bay fishing in the Newport Bay area?

This exact reason I didn't buy this unit even if it's 7".

I had a Garmin striker 4 for about 3 years or so. $100 went a long way these 3 years. Getting another one for a different setup and looking at the 4cv model that has contour marking capabilities. But that's a tad pricier...

The reviews on amazon are horrible on this model too.

I have the striker 4 plus. It is great. Only wished it had sd card or wife to transfer the data... I just got yet another small boat and think what to put on it. My striker 4 plus is on my kayak. I do have the Garmin castable with gps. I use it when I bike/hike to a spot... Not down imaging on it

How is the striker plus? I love the function of you can see the contour of the area you are fishing often, can you save those map data in the unit? Is there are limit on area you can save? I think I am going to get the plus soon.

Iike it. I have not got my limit yet. I have the cv version. Iike that I can see how deep and area is on screen. It kinda makes you want to map the whole area. The only issue is that you cannot save off the data. I used to have it networked with an echomap... Not sure if the contour data is synced, but the waypoints were. I will contact Garmin... I know there is a hack I can do to get the data

All these comments about the lack of mapping and the apparent cost of anything similar that can. Aren't there any android water navigation apps? (I'm no angler, but my brother in law is and I'm always looking for useful gifts)

Navionics is a good app. However is on yearly subscription for $22. It's not expensive. But when you are on the water you don't want to mess your phone a lot if you don't have to. So a fishfinder(waterproof too) and GPS/nav will be much better knowing where you want to go fish.

i have the tripleshot for my yak. I originally thought the sidescan was going to be a go-to feature, but I rarely use it. most days I have 2 screens up, downview and sonar. i have been exploring using it as a flasher for ice fishing recently, but I havent taken it out yet.
I guess the last word is, nice to have the features available, but not how I ended up using it mostly.
Same here. rarely use SI on the 7 TS cause I can't get much information from that resolution. Recently bought a hummingbird 9' MEGA SI+ G4N, image looks much nicer on demo but I haven't tested it on water yet.

I've never had good success with Lowrance products. I recommend Garmin or Simrad.
