Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

I have both the Gateway slim 14 (last year's model with the 10th gen i5) and this HP with upgraded NVMe drive. They are both fine for the average user. The gateway feels sturdier to me. But, having the 17" screen is a big perk for many.

After installation windows 11 on the new Samsung SSD, my spinning 1tb drive is not showing up. Any idea?

I had a similar issue when I put a 2.5inch SSD in place of the spinner - had to use a tool from EASEUS to find the hardware, partition drive and format.

So I bought one of these for my wife. I've got 1TB NVME SSD to put in it, but need to download the driver for the installer to find it. I tried following HP's instructions here [hp.com], which say to "Download Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) drivers from the HP Software and Drivers web page and extract them to the USB flash drive". Trouble is, the HP support site says the serial number is not valid (slight cause for concern). Can't find it by the model number either. I tried the SKU from the box (and model and serial). Nothing. There's a different sku in the title for the product listing on the ebay page for it, 4B770AV. Tried that- it works, however the only driver download available for Windows 10 is "HP Cloud Recovery". I tried detecting drivers with their tool on the laptop itself. It comes back saying it can't identify my product. I'm about to give up and request a refund.

Edit... Cooler heads prevail, googled "Intel RST driver for 17-CN1053CL"
which found me this HP support thread [hp.com]. Going to give it a go before bailing on this. My gut tells me however, finding the rest of the drivers is going to be a chore.

All in all this is my least favorite refurbished laptop purchase ever. The laptop came with a generic user with no password already set up. It also had been renamed "Vlad" I found this to be super sketchy. I disconnected that drive and installed my own drive, but have been having similar struggles. I got Windows 10 installed using the driver you listed but finding the rest of the drivers has been a bit of a pain. Mine came the same way, named Vlad as well. Under Windows 11 for the generic sku there appear to be many more drivers available. It could be the retail variant of this model was only offered with Windows 11.

After encountering Vlad, I went to a fresh install from flash of Windows 11 to an SSD and wiped the HDisk. The flash drive install gives you the option to sideload the storage drivers referenced here, and with that done, everything just worked on Win 11. No further hassles.

The one I received is in like new condition. While it is not lightweight, the display is a lot brighter and more contrasty than the HP 14" models. I am pleased with it.

I had similar problems. Gave up, cloned the drive, removed the spinner, and then updated the OS to 11. Battery life jumped without spinner. I'll just buy an enclosure and use it as a backup drive. Drivers all good after install of 11. I'm okay without doing the clean wipe.

If you do a Windows 11 install then the Intel driver for your SSD will be all you need. I did have a delay in terms of Windows 11 activating my trackpad - that was unnerving but somehow cleared on its own while I researched potential explanations for a dead trackpad. Good luck!
