$149.99 after using the listed promo code FTPBU8562

Seems like a pretty good deal, strong 12th gen i5, 6 core 12 threads. Unsure how long the deal will be going for, I don't see any sale end date. Thought I'd let y'all know about this since I haven't seen it posted when I tried searching beforehand. Compatible with cheap ddr4 and ddr4 mobos. Good for gaming. Not the best in the world, but cheap, and effective in gaming. The F means no integrated graphics meaning you'll need a dedicated GPU for this cpu.

At $25 less than the 5600X, this should generally be a no brainer for new budget builds.... BUT! Are there any sub-$100 LGA 1700 motherboards that aren't garbage?
The i5-12400 using the Intel Box Cooler: Laminar RM1 does not exceed 81°C in a closed chassis during a full load multi-threaded stress test according to https://videocardz.com/newz/intel...rd-chassis and 80°C for https://www.techspot.com/review/2...-i5-12400/

The 5600X using the Wraith Stealth air cooler peaks at 95°C during a full load multi-threaded stress test according to https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...3-review/2
definitely need to factor in overall platform cost including mobo/memory and not just the processor. also, thought i read somewhere the stock intel cpu cooler is quite a bit inferior when compared to AMD so that could be additional cost.

Stupid question but would this be an upgrade over Ryzen 3600? Haven't poked at my pc rig in years. Out of the loop when it comes to new cpus.

Better to just update the system you have already probably.

Check for Bios update to see if your board supports the 5000series. If so get a 5800x, 5600x, or even a 5800x3D.

I have a B450 board so just upgraded the CPU to a 5600x from MC. That should hold me for a few years.
GPU is older so waiting till the next Gen comes out in hopes it pushs down the current gen later this year.

Would this be good for Valve Index vr build. I don't (currently) play any PC games, if I did would probably be sports, maybe GTA type games, maybe RPG's similar to Zelda if those exist. No, fantasy games if that makes a difference.

Oh understood (though some do go 3) but with the entry prices of MBs nulling the savings of a good proc and AMDs right around the corner, better life cycle, less expensive entry to boards ...AMD just seems like a better choice unless you have a need for an Intel feature. I got 12th Gen...but I had nothing before that and I couldn't wait. heh.

Plus I really needed thunderbolt 4. Like really bad. That was my only concern really.
LGA 1700 = 12th & 13th Gen = 6xx and 7xx series motherboard
LGA 1200 = 10th & 11th Gen = 4xx and 5xx
LGA 1151 = 8th & 9th Gen = 3xx
and so on.

Intel call the CPU platform upgrades as Tik and Tok. Tik is a new process and tok is the refinement
For the record while AM4 has been around along time --using and older chipset motherboard does not allow all the features of a new processor.

Agreed. Mobo and fan seem to be two places Intel nabs ya. I am like 5yrs into the same AM4 mobo, which was relatively cheap at the time, and I just keep popping in processors. AM4 is finally coming to an end this year with the next batch of PCs, but I can't really complain...I have updated CPU three times in the same old board. Sure, I miss a few features of the new ones, but I'm not significantly bottlenecked, and it sure is sweet to just spend 10min dropping in a CPU and calling it done.

Does any of your software complain about needing a new license due to the new CPU? Windows used to complain.

I was going to say the same thing, ok you save 25 bucks, end up with a trashy shitbox mobo, and a worse product for overall performance per dollar.

Just got this and the Gigabyte Z690i Lite for ~$300. Pretty good price for ITX build. Not sure if the mobo will be trash but it's latest gen hardware and price point says it's comparable to Ryzen 5600/B550. Lot's of shills here afraid of legit comparisons.

with windows 10, this has never been a thing...that I know of

Just keep the same mobo and add whatever parts you want, reload the OS all you want...pretty nice really

Motherboards really aren't that far apart for each platform these days. Intel has some very good b660 boards that aren't very expensive

Sucks that it can't be overclocked, hence no K in the model nomenclature

Hope I've helped some people out there on the interwebs save some money in these troubled times <3

For anybody wondering, when I've looked at comparisons, a 5600x and b550 is similar in price to a 12400f and b660. Of course prices can very from retailers and even over time.

By all means, pick whichever you'd like. I personally went 12th gen intel recently myself after having, tl;dr, ftpm issues and/or a dying cpu bring a once competent ryzen 3700x to its knees so badly that a $300 Xbox Series S is outperforming it. I watched with my own eyes someone stream Fortnite for hours yesterday at 120fps constantly on the Series S, yet my much more expensive pc stutters and lags in games of all ages. That's doing weeks/months of depressing troubleshooting and extensive testing into a short version that doesn't do it any justice lol.

I've used them both over the years, no bias, have even used ryzen exclusively for years now... the simple facts are 12th gen intel isn't affected by this ftpm crap that still affected a bunch of us even after the vender fix in May after AMD acknowledged the problem in ~March. Peace of mind can be priceless, and, I'm done with tech issues and am throwing in the towel on this ryzen build. I went ddr4 mobo on purpose due to not being sold on ddr5 considering its price, and purposefully chose a cpu with E cores to avoid being required to use win11, I'm holding out years on that after hearing loads of horror stories and not even wanting to deal with that headache. After awhile, tech and hardware issues really take a roll on your morale.

that rx6600 is a good deal posted as well, a discount code, rebate code, AND three new games. Great deal, on par with the rtx 2060 super. Pretty good for gaming.

Still rocking a i7-4790k and 1080ti…..wanting to upgrade to 11th or 12th gen though. When do we typically see mobo/processor combo deals, cyber Monday?

No. You need to change more than just one item to get that nag screen from MS. If you change a MB/CPU/Mem, that will trigger it, but a new CPU is no problem at all.

There's always the possibility of software overclocking. I haven't done it in a number of years though...

I hear you. I currently own Z97 build containing a i7-4770K+1070, but I have since repurposed that PC and upgraded to a R7-5800X+1080Ti. After a while, I started to realize that having only 4-cores can be limiting and a bottleneck for CPU intensive tasks like converting different video formats. Guess you must be waiting for the right time to upgrade.
