At $25 less than the 5600X, this should generally be a no brainer for new budget builds.... BUT! Are there any sub-$100 LGA 1700 motherboards that aren't garbage?

The i5-12400 using the Intel Box Cooler: Laminar RM1 does not exceed 81°C in a closed chassis during a full load multi-threaded stress test according to https://videocardz.com/newz/intel...rd-chassis and 80°C for https://www.techspot.com/review/2...-i5-12400/

The 5600X using the Wraith Stealth air cooler peaks at 95°C during a full load multi-threaded stress test according to https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...3-review/2

definitely need to factor in overall platform cost including mobo/memory and not just the processor. also, thought i read somewhere the stock intel cpu cooler is quite a bit inferior when compared to AMD so that could be additional cost.

Agreed. Mobo and fan seem to be two places Intel nabs ya. I am like 5yrs into the same AM4 mobo, which was relatively cheap at the time, and I just keep popping in processors. AM4 is finally coming to an end this year with the next batch of PCs, but I can't really complain...I have updated CPU three times in the same old board. Sure, I miss a few features of the new ones, but I'm not significantly bottlenecked, and it sure is sweet to just spend 10min dropping in a CPU and calling it done.

I wouldn't expect any sub 100 until black Friday or refurbished. It's hard to recommend the 1700 platform unless you absolutely need to upgrade. The life of it seemly is already decided (13 Gen is rumored to be the last) and Intel just gouging for chipset upgrades. If DDR5 is coming down, I just wait for AMDs new platform if ya can.

I mostly disagree, high end LGA 1700 boards are fine and really aren't more expensive than AM4. There is nothing different with LGA 1700 than any other generation really, so the two generations on one socket isn't unexpected. In fact, 13th gen on a B660 isn't expected.

Right now the issue is supply as the 700 series motherboards are coming out at the end of next month. I don't know if there are ever going to be decent B (or H for that matter) boards for a while.

Ordered this and MSI bazooka b660m $130 couple days ago. Also ordered some cheap xpg d30 for $48. Waiting for UPS to deliver it so I can't comment on anything.

Also, if you're cheap like me pay with Paypal and discover to get the 5% CB.

Oh understood (though some do go 3) but with the entry prices of MBs nulling the savings of a good proc and AMDs right around the corner, better life cycle, less expensive entry to boards ...AMD just seems like a better choice unless you have a need for an Intel feature. I got 12th Gen...but I had nothing before that and I couldn't wait. heh.

Plus I really needed thunderbolt 4. Like really bad. That was my only concern really.

I also bought the MSI B660M Bazooka. Should be good budget - midrange board. Waiting to see if the 12400 comes down from its stuck price of $193 for about 2 months now.

I have a 10400f now, on a z590 board; this seems cheap enough but would I notice a difference?

Edit: Nvm, just noticed it's 1700 so I'd need a new board too

With a 12400, you aren't overclocking the cpu, the stock cooler is more than capable enough. Factor in the savings on a cooler vs an alternative
