I understand your sentiment and logic. But the use cases are different. I own firestick, fire cube and the apple tv 4k, use the fire cube the most. But it is also true tat I feel apple tv 4k is a better device when theres an iphone and macbook around. But yup, if someone does not have apple devices, then fire stick makes more sense.
I've been using the Apple TV 4K for years, and I highly recommend it as well. My first Apple TV 4K allowed me to enjoy my Sony 4K TV from 2015 again. The OS on the Sony is so slow, and the built in Chromecast playback is choppy as well. The Apple TV 4K has been amazing ever since.
Thanks!
I do the majority of my streaming via XBOX - any reason I would need this? I do have an iPhone and iPad .
Any reason? A number of posters above have noted the ecosystem and snappy performance. Pretty much every smart device has access to all the streaming services now so it comes down to experience and performance versus cost. This generation of Apple TV is nearly instant on and you're into watching content rather quickly. Even a Series X takes a min or two to get up and running, then into your streaming service of choice and get to watching content. If that doesn't matter to you, don't feel like you need one of these. But if streaming content is a daily experience and an efficient way to do so is important to you, I'd say ATV is the best in the business. You will obviously find differing opinions in this thread.
What's the life cycle on these? Is the next gen expected to come out soon? Bf has been wanting to get this and wondering if I should jump on this deal.
It has varied. This is the 2nd gen Apple TV 4K which was released 2021.
Wow. Great deal! Got the 64gb open box excellent for $128. I'm sure apple has a new generation coming if these are at this price, but I'll risk it and resell if its that much better.

I've used my 4th gen Apple TV since 2015 and it's still going strong. I *only* bought the 2021 4k model recently for the new remote which is $59 outright, so upgrading after 7 years made sense to me. If it wasn't for the remote and getting a new 4k tv I'd probably get several more years out of my old Apple TV. I wish I waited, because this price is a no brainer IMO!
I plan to use this box solely as a streaming device - don't have much interest in games. Is there any reason to wait for the rumored refresh this fall, or should I bite on this deal?
$120 for 32gb seems like a very good price, and, from what I've read, 64gb isn't necessary unless I want to game
This is such an ignorant trolling statement. I have a 6 year old Apple TV that still doesn't crash, rarely ever lags and is the least frustrating of all my streaming devices. If you have the money, the Apple TV is by far the best of all of them, in my opinion. Source: I have multiple fire sticks and a fire cube (HD and 4K, 2-3 years old), along with an HD ~2015 Apple TV and a 4k ~2019 Apple TV. Do I wish the Apple TV's weren't 4X-6X the price, a absolutely, but they're noticeably better than any of the others and it's not even close. And that includes my 2 LG OLED OS I use to stream too (C7 and C1).
Is this still a thing? The constant switching from add-in to add-in just to find a stable source was so frustrating. Has it improved over the years?
I use two add-on's, PlexKodiConnect and Channels DVR. It is my TV, my Movie player and Music player. Works great as an all in one media center. It has always been a thing since is was XBMC.

I have a the latest google chromecast and this thing just lags like there is no tomorrow. Normally I am good with purchases but I failed on this one. Super frustrating. I cannot wait until we switch to Apple TV. Holding out until the fall though.

some TVs offer airplay… what extra advantage that we get with this device even after having airplay in the TV
thanks
