Exactly. Battery powered lawn equipment is nowhere near as economical as gas. I've got a 13 year old lawn mower still going strong. Deck is rusting out from abuse but B&S engine still working fine. Starts up 3rd pull every time. Can mow 30 minutes or 4 hours if I need too. Before the current gas hike, cost me ~$8 per summer in gas for my yard.

Maybe come back in 20 years where battery powered lawn equipment makes sense.
To each his own...After using battery powered equipment for the last 4 years, I have not missed gas equipment one minute. I will never go back to gas.

Had this mower for two seasons now and it does what I need it to do. Im on a 1/2 acre of bermuda grass and it does just fine. The batteries last long enough for me to mow, then edge and blow the driveway/patio leaving a bar or two on the battery.

I didn't like like how high it was cutting even at the lowest setting so I threw some washers behind the blade to get it close with the bermuda and its been awesome. Id also add that it is mostly plastic and you can feel the difference coming from a metal framed gas mower to this as far as how rigid it feels.
Doesn't the blade have custom notches? How does adding washers behind it work?

I have an old gas mower that I've been abusing for years now. I mow over everything, rocks, sticks, whatever. I don't winterize it, or do anything other than toss some gas/oil in it when needed. I was kind of hoping to ruin it just to have an excuse to go electric. Now I'm wondering if by having a plastic mower, would an inadvertent rock break the deck if the blade kicked it up?
The deck isn't plastic.....

Depends.

I have a handheld blower, string and hedge trimmer that operate on the Dewalt 20V line of batteries.

The handheld blower is good for cleaning out the garage, blowing off the porch, etc, but would never be a contender as a real leaf blower (I have a gas backpack for that)

The hedge trimmer is great, replaced a corded model that I cut the cord on accidentally. I'd never consider a gas model for such an application, I'm not a pro landscaper and a lot of that work is at arm level or higher

The string trimmer replaced a perfectly functional gas one, I just got frustrated with those tiny engines that tend to have issues.

Battery chainsaws have a place as limbers and for the one-off small trees and such, but you're not going to cut down a real tree with one.

Each has its place is what I'm trying to say - if you have a tiny lawn, no space to store gas, battery makes perfect sense, but if you have gas for several engines, or you have a larger lawn, battery might not make sense for much of the equipment.

As someone pointed out a 5ah battery is $150 and the mower/battery combo is $200. Another $125 for an additional 1Ah (+20% runtime theoretically) doesn't seem like a good decision when you could just spend $25 more and get +100% more ah. Or, buy 2 of these combos and sell the mower - if you get more than $50 for it, it's a wash.

This looks identical to the ryobi 20" 40v mower I've got. Great mower for the price. Goes right through the tall wet grass that I've been neglecting. Only hesitates when the bag gets full, but that's a good thing in my eyes.

For future proofing, can you put a newer battery in 5Ah compartment? As long as it's 40V

These are generally good for weekly mowing in dry conditions. For folks who like to mow bi-weekly in relatively wet conditions, gas is still the way to go.
Maybe this electric mower is not the way to go for big jobs, but 'gas is the way to go' is not accurate either. Many lawn services are switching over to battery for economic reasons, and the switch is quickly paying off and the customers love it too. Maintenance and fuel savings is the main reason. Also, if you only cut grass seasonally, gas goes bad and gums up, no more crossing your fingers and hoping it will start. If you cut wet grass and have a big yard, maybe look into something that is scaled bigger. I have a maybe 15 yards of grass so haven't had to look into that. I was given an old black and decker piece of crap, the battery last about 5 minutes and it works for my purpose better than any gas mower.

No, they're fiber reinforced and quite flexible (which makes it harder to break). My biggest gripe when I had one was it was TOO light, and made it hard to see where you cut sometimes (no wheel marks).

Depending on the state. For where I live, commercial services still use gas. I have a half acre and a busy schedule. An electric mower with stated run time of 60 minutes in optimal conditions would last maybe 15 minutes when we have lots of rain. As for maintenance, change my own oil once a season for maybe $5. Sharpen my own blade every other year. As for gas? 5 gallons ($25 in current prices) basically last me all year. No need to recharge batteries or buy new batteries when they degrade.

Agree on the TOO light biz, at least that was a problem for me mowing across steep hillsides with an older corded electric mower. It had a tendency to tip up (on the higher side), making the cut uneven.

However, I just gambled the $128 +tax on this one to see. Hope the blade comes off easy for sharpening, and that it really can mulch!
And my older B&S powered gas mower will still be useful to tame some areas bordering a nearby retention basin.
