Well...I don't know how realistic that is, because then why wouldn't Panasonic just do this?

This is a fantastic hybrid camera and Panasonic is always underrated by the Sony/Canon folks. If I wasn't in Fuji this would be my next go-to.

the Panasonic isn't compact. it's almost the opposite of compact.

I have the S5 and it's extremely compact. What are you talking about?

FYI if you order via Amazon, the body itself eligible for 30 day return for a full refund, but the kit with the lens is not returnable. So make sure you really want/like the camera. The other retailers might have a more generous return policy for the kit.

Great camera in a lot of ways, but the autofocus is 2 generations behind Canon/Sony.

Any photographer with decent skills will not let the minuscule AF differences stop them. Very subjective since AF depends on many factors. Reviews are outstanding on it.

Absolutely not true. First of all, even photographers with "decent skills" use autofocus and will buy cameras just for the autofocus ability. Sports photography relies heavily on auto focus. Entire generations of Nikons or Canons were won based upon small differences in auto focus ability. Second of all, autofocus is extremely handy when shooting video with fast lenses. I'm a professional videographer who regularly uses $10k-$20k professional video cameras. We recently tested a sony SLR that featured its latest autofocus technology using a 50mm f1.2 lens at its maximum aperture. Normally, this would be a difficult shot for a moving subject. Even the head movements that a person makes during an interview would put them out of focus. The Sony eye tracking auto focus never missed a single frame over the entire test. I and many of my colleagues have spent years honing follow focus skills. The Sony is better. It's also twice as much as this camera. Nevertheless, there are many many "decent" photographers who wouldn't buy this camera because of the autofocus.

Compared for what? Stills shooting? Vlogging? Travel? Action shooting? Run and gun video? Professional video? Autofocus? Too broad a question without knowing what you plan to do.

S5 has advantages and a7C has advantages. Depends on use case.

The fact that A7C doesn't have 4K60 or 10-bit internal is enough to disregard it. Especially at this price point

Have owned this camera for nearly two months and have recently took it on a trip abroad for street, landscape, and portrait photography. Overall the camera is great, I have enjoyed using it it for a few factors. The image quality is fantastic, the lowlight is great, and the ergonomics are very comfortable.

With that said, I found two major drawbacks for the camera. As others have stated the autofocus is not great. In a previous review I mentioned it was decent when it came to autofocus, since that review I have shot around 6k images and unfortunately during that process my opinion has changed for the worse. Frankly, for a camera that came out in late 2020, the autofocus has been appalling. It works fairly well in good lighting and with a clear subject that fills most of the frame. Outside of that it is a coin toss, during night shots it is even worse. I found myself manually focusing most of the time, which is a shame as even my older Canon T6i seemed to perform better in that regard. After playing around with the settings, I found Area and Pinpoint to be the best settings depending on the situation. Pinpoint in particular seemed to be the best for low light, however Manual was still the better choice most of the time.

What made matters worse was the second drawback, the EVF. Initially I didn't have an issue with it, however I found my hit-rate using it to be significantly lower than the back display. This is mainly due to the low resolution, shots that I thought were in focus when viewing the EVF tended to be off once I viewed it on the back display or on my PC. At this point I primarily shoot using the back display, which I should mention is great, just not always ergonomically preferred.

Overall for this price I still recommend this camera, it is fun and the images are amazing when in focus. Just know getting into this camera it is not reliable with autofocus. You can get around this of course, but it is still is not ideal. If you are a portrait or landscape photographer or are a videographer that focuses manually, it is an excellent choice.
