Matte finish could be the most important change for others (I have two windows behind me so the C1 has a lot of reflections during the day).
Also, first world problem, but I have a 65" C9 in the same room so I always have to use the physical power buttons to avoid the remotes turning both on and off.
Probably still not worth $500 for the differences though, you're right.
For PC gaming, you can play at whatever resolution you want. It can take up the whole screen, it can take up just the space in front of your eyes. It's up to you. You have the option and the qualities of this screen being an OLED with fast response times and high refresh rate makes it technically superior to most monitors out there.
The main advantage is that I strictly upgraded from the 38" IPS ultrawide I was using because now I have the option of turning it into a 48" tv or monitor. Plus it has much better picture quality.

Anyways, looking at the listing, I cannot find any indication that this thing has black-frame insertion for motion-blur-reduction. This was a big reason I got the C1 over the CX and C2. For PC gaming, it's a big improvement for motion clarity.
You might not care about this in lieu of the other features. Having display port is incredibly useful for PC users. I had to upgrade my 3d card from a 2080 to a 3060 TI in order to have HDMI 2.1 which was necessary to get 120hz 4k on my 48" C1. The 3060 TI is only slightly faster than a 2080. I did it just to get 120hz. So for those with older 3d cards, this is one less headache.

I do hope they follow up with a 42" model 🤞

We recently upgraded to the 43" Dell 4k monitor at work - it's great to have all that bezel-less screen space, but that monitor is really pushing it for my comfort with how wide it is. I think I'd have a hard time with 48" in a regular desk configuration.
At home I have the Alienware 38" ultra wide, which I like a lot, but I wouldn't mind more vertical space. I think the perfect monitor for me would be a 38"-43" curved 4k screen, using OLED or comparable technology. Perhaps one day.

sitting far back from the monitor or trying to sit close
Sitting far back makes zero sense other than saying "I have big monitor." You buy large TVs because you are in a bigger room and want to sit farther away. Doing the inverse is silly. You will need to zoom even more than you might already at 4K and end up with the same, or less net functional screen real estate, just spread out over a larger physical space. It reminds me of sim racers who can't understand that a 32" screen 20" from your face is much better than a 48" screen 30" from your face.
Up close is more intriguing. If you can put up with the uber-low circa 2002 ~91 ppi (think 24" @1080p), can you use the extra real estate? This was the best overview of that use case I found:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqVwlMm
The screen is just too physically big that in that use case you are moving your head, which is not desirable for either work or gaming. Look how his primary window is always a fraction of the screen.
Other than OLED, I gotta believe it is people convincing themselves "bigger is better."
I could maybe see it for someone with limited space who just wants one monitor for work/gaming/console/streaming and plays a lot of console games, but as a straight dedicated monitor, especially for PC gaming, I don't see the appeal and objectively it makes no sense, but the market is freeeeeeeeeee...
Maybe this or the QD OLED.
