FYI- if you lose the remote and initiate a factory reset, because you assume you can pair another bluetooth remote with this (like you can on Fire TV devices), you will essentially brick the device. You can use other bluetooth remotes with this, provided you are not in the initialization phase. Some day maybe I will find the missing remote, but until then I've got a useless white dongle.
I bought mines after months of using Samsung QN90A's Tizen OS and hating it. It has been an awesome experience. The big advantage of this Chromecast over the previous ones is that is has Google OS where you can download essentially any app off the Google Play Store. I use alternate apps for YouTube to get an Ad-Free experience and have played some video game emulators also. I would easily recommend it for $40, the only thing I wish it had was more storage but you can connect a SSD or something with a dongle if that's important to you.
I have in my house rokus (express, 2 x streaming+, ultra), an Amazon fire stick and 3 Chromecasts with Google tv. I like the remote of the Roku by far but the UI, speed and usability of the chromecast is far superior imo. Obviously, this is always a subjective take.

One thing I've found is that casting across subnets is easier to configure for Google devices (Chromecast, speakers) than for the Roku. I have a pretty involved (for a regular home) ubi
quiti unifi setup and I'm still struggling to get the rokus to work consistently when my phone is on a different subnet (which is my default).

I still got a bunch of gen1 Chromecasts - need some of those trade in deals to appear again!

On another thought compared to other streaming devices, I think the only use case for these are casting from your chrome computer browser, which a lot of smart tvs have screen mirroring. Any other advantages of Chromecasts?

When I first bought this device is was very buggy and a not prime time product. After Google launched a new update it seems to have got alot better and more stable although some bug still linger.

Make sure after full setup you check for an update by going to settings -> About -> System update and hit "check for update" it will say "Up to date" but hit "Check for updates" one more time and if not already updated it will find the new update.

These are so much better than the old Chromecasts that they aren't even in the same ballpark. I love this device, and replaced all my Roku devices with these. Both the remote and the UI are excellent and super intuitive. If you're in the market, I think these are better than anything else I've used. I did buy a silicone remote cover so I don't lose the remote, and I don't understand why a remote locator isn't standard on all modern remotes. But overall I'm very happy with this device.

These are good. I think the performance is pretty good as well on Chromecast. Its much better than my Fire TV stick. That is so slow its painful. I take a spare unit when I travel as well.

So if you bought one of these 2 days ago and already set it up, what's the best way to get Amazon.com to credit the difference in cost without having to hassle with a return & re-purchase?

EDIT: Just asked for a price adjustment refund in chat and they had no problem crediting the difference to my account.

Been researching these.....do you need to use a smart phone for some of the features? My 3 Firesticks are painful to use.

This will be fully functional without using a Smartphone. If you have a smartphone you will also be able to cast audio, video, or pictures from your Android phone or even mirror the screen from you device on your TV. I believe that you can do that as well with an IOS device if you use a third party app but I have not tried that. I have 3 of these device and they are my favorite streaming devices I have used.

Nice! More often than not, they will just tell you to return and rebuy these days (which makes no sense).

Unless you really need Dolby Vision/Atmos, a better deal is the Onn Android TV box for $19.88 at walmart. VIPOutlet had it for $14 a few weeks ago (not refurbbed, amazingly), and I got two more to give to friends who recently got the YT Premium "hack."

The UI and hardware are identical. Maybe one way someone will hack in the support, as the SOC is the same as in the Chromecast and in the Tivo dongle.
