I personally think $50 more for a 3070 vs 3060 is worth it alone (unless laptop screen size and/or storage capacity matters more to you).
Nostril Webcam and a big bottom screen bezel. I wish they went with 16:10 and make the screen bigger or at least move the screen down and put the webcam on the top of the monitor.
I'm considering the Costco deal for the MSI GE76 that goes live on 8/31 for $1199.99 over this but I'm curious about people's thoughts.

It looks like the differences are:
Costco/MSI | Best Buy/Gigabyte
17.3" screen | 15.6" screen
RTX 3060 | RTX 3070
1TB SSD | 512GB SSD
$1199.99 | $1249.99

This is the Costco laptop in question:
https://www.costco.com/msi-ge76-r...49691.html

And this is the link to the Costco ad that shows it going on sale 8/31 (see page 4 at the top).

DDR5 will not make any noticeable difference in performance with these laptops.
Fair, but 11th gen Intel to 12th gen will...

How would this compare to the legion deal with the 3060? Apart from the 3070 being better. What about the build quality?

I had that 3060 laptop ge76, and it was running same speeds as other laptops 3070's I assume due to thermal efficiency. I was very happy with it. But returned it as buyers remorse $$$

I wonder if this will drop below 1199

Is $50 more worth it for intel 12th gen vs 11th gen and a slower refresh rate (120 vs 240hz) and also a smaller drive 1TB vs 512GB?
Depending on usage... but for me 240hz makes me nauseated in first person view games.

I bought this laptop last year and LOVE it. The on board panel kind of sucks but I use external 3 monitors and do CAD plus programming in Linux so I am often not using the on board screen. I am going to buy another one because of your post when it goes on sale for my son. So thanks for the info. I haven't found a computer that meets the nexus of price and performance like this one.

Anyone have any opinion on how the GE76 (at this price) compares to last year's legion 5 pro that was clearanced for $1000 at Costco? Specifically the 16" with 11800H + 3050 + 16GB DDR4 + 512GB? I bought the Legion last month and battery life at 40% brightness + battery saver has been atrocious (under 2 hours even when doing simple tasks like Microsoft apps + web browser); I have 6 weeks left in my return window .

I bought this laptop in July when it was on sale for $1299. I previously had a Gigabyte Aero 15x from 2018. This thing is pretty much an upgrade in every facet. It has a very similar chasis; it is slightly thicker, yet the thermal performance is miles better than with my Aero 15x. No more overheating issues at max settings and I don't even need to undervolt, use a cooling pad, or do a repaste. I also use this laptop for WFH, productivity, and photo editing, and really like how they kept the same large port selection along with the dedicated full SD card reader. Currently using this laptop as a mobile workstation and the RTX 3070 allows me to daisy chain multiple monitors using just the Displayport. Highly recommend this beast of a laptop especially at this price.

If the screen is the big draw for you, 1080p on a 17" seems kinda low.

I was looking to build a budget to mid-range gaming PC (plus peripherals), but at these laptop prices, it almost seems cheaper to get a laptop! Am I missing something? RTX 3070 alone is $500+

Really depends as there are pluses and minuses

Pro for Laptops:
- Everything is included (including peripherals)
- No need to assembly + plan
- Portability
- Can get pretty good deals (from a sum of parts angle) as the entire unit gets discounted at once

Cons:
- Non-upgradability
- Build quality matter a lot! Great parts selections could easily be undercut by poor cooling/design
- Laptop parts are not equivalent to their desktop counterparts. Take GPUs are example. In the past, mobile GPUs were downclocked/undervolted versions of their desktop counterparts (in order to hit power requirements, understandable for a mobile parts). However, as desktop parts get more power hungry, companies have really taken a hatchet to mobile parts. Not are you getting downclocked versions, but they are cutting core specs themselves. Less CUDA cores (desktop 3070 --> 5888 Cuda cores, laptop 3070 --> 5120 Cuda Cores) or even like different bus speeds (the Rtx 2060s were guilty of that)
- Difference in power requirements. Even among mobile parts, OEM settings (like pre-set power requirements) can drastically alter performance.

This TechSpot article comparing a Desktop 3070 vs Laptop 3070 (both 80 watts and 115 watts) shows that you can leaving up to 50% performance in gaming using a laptop GPU versus a Desktop GPU
