Is this any good? Specs look on the high end, without spending over $2000.

But how is Acer long term with these kinds of machines?

Damn that rtx 3060 version deserves a post of its own. Balance of specs is almost perfect for people that want to do light gaming on the go.

RTX 3060
12th gen i7
Wifi 6E
Thunderbolt 4
All for $1200

SSD instead NVME of on a device like this is a heartbreaker tho. And it's kinda heavy at over 5 lbs.

That is a NVMe SSD and all the PCIe SSD released in last couple of years, support NVMe. And why you think 5 lbs is heavy for a full sized gaming laptops? All the full sized gaming laptops using full powered GPU, are over 5 lbs. How much Alienware m15 or Legion 5/5 Pro weights?, they are over 5.5 lbs.

Good to know this is NVME!

As far as weight goes, I don't think 5 is terrible but other laptops in this class that I've been eyeing are lighter.
Asus TUF Dash 15, ASUS Zephyrus 15, and Razer Blade 15 are 4.5 lbs. Gigabyte Aorus is 4.8. It's not a huge difference, but anyone looking to travel often with their laptop will be notice.

You did not get my point in the 1st place. All the laptops you have referenced, are especially designed Thin & Light design and they achieve that using low TGP Graphics. For example, Zephyrus G15 using a 100W TGP Card with 20W in dynamic Boost. Gigabyte Aorus 15 maxed out to 130W. On the other hand, full sized Laptops like this one, use full power GPU like 150W for this one. To give you an example, the 140W RTX 3060 in Legion 5 Pro performs almost similarly and sometimes beat the RTX 3070 in Zephyrus G15. This is more or less equivalent to their ROG Strix series and all of them are over 5 lbs. Acer also has Predator 500 SE series which is their Thin & Light Gaming laptop.
When you go for full powered CPU and GPU based laptops which can sustain higher Power for longer duration, they are almost over 5lbs. Examples I've given earlier like Legion 5 Pro, Alienware M15 2022, Asus ROG Strix series. Due to higher power requirements, these laptops need bigger cooling solution and higher airflow which increases the dimension and weight.

Ahh gotcha. Wasn't paying attention to the full power gpu, which is a huge plus. Just figured the engineering behind making gaming laptop thin and light added to the cost so that's the sacrifice Acer made here to make the laptop cheaper. Definitely not the full story though, so thanks for the explanation! Going to pull the trigger since I haven't seen a better deal for a <$1200 laptop with the latest tech.

If you are eyeing for the $1199.99 model with RTX 3060 then look for the Aorus 15 2022

Oo that's a good candidate too. Having a hard time figuring out if it's WiFi 6E or just 6. Also need to think about whether the power port being on the right side will be a problem or not. Thanks for the suggestion! Good thing BB has a 14 day return period lol.

edit:
another good candidate in that range is the HP omen 16. 16gb DDR5, 1Tb NVME. aluminum body (not plastic). Just hard to shake the bad feels I still have with HP after my last experience using their laptops over a decade ago. Hopefully they've changed a lot since then. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-o...Id=6503846

Yes Omen 16 is a good candidate and the model you're checking is the latest 2022 model with updated thermals. HP never mentions their TGP of the GPU but I have checked various reviews and can confirm that ut has the highest power RTX 3060, up to 140W. That is really a good candidate and actually better than Acer Helios one.

Been trying to do some more research on this HP. There were major complaints about the heat and noise in the previous version that I can't imagine was fully resolved with this latest version. Looks like they chopped some of the battery for more thermals so I could be wrong. Also TKL keyboard vs compacted full keyboard. Agreed it seems better than the Acer. So just need to decide between this and the Gigabyte.

Really wish the comparably specced Dell G15 dropped to $1200! Would be nice to only carry one charger for both work and play laptops.

I was looking over the HP Omen manual and am really impressed with the amount of detail there is in that thing. It has a graphical breakdown of all of the parts, part numbers for replacement parts, and instructions for doing end user upgrades/repairs. I haven't seen that level of detail in another manufacturer's laptop manual so far.
