No. This drive tends to freeze when it wants to do some internal maintenance. The freeze periods can be quite long - 10-15 seconds.

For an OS drive you want something with DRAM, like Hynix S31, WD Blue, MX500.
Up until last week I had been using this drive in a Thinkpad X230 for years and not once experienced this behavior.
Same, I've used only DRAM-less SSDs for years as I didn't even know what SSD dram was and just bought the cheapest Samsung and Crucial offerings. people on this site tend to say you NEED relatively expensive features that most people really don't.

While it's better to have one with DRAM when using it for an OS drive, it's not totally necessary. I've used plenty of DRAM-less drives as system drives and they usually work adequately. Also, Raspberry Pis are designed to run off Micro-SD cards and generally do a lot less I/O than a regular PC.

That said, I would strongly advise against the Crucial BX500. I too have had the freezing issue and found that the ONLY solution is to wipe the drive and re-write all the data. It is by far the worst SSD I've ever used and truly does slow down well below the speeds of a hard drive. I'd buy one of those cheap no-name drives before I'd buy another one of these.

You need to try the other dramless drives on the market buddy lol. I can in good faith say I've tested about 7 different dramless drives on the market and the BX is the best bar non. The others are even worse than what you described. But it can also be a bad drive too. Even crucial and Samsung high end nvme drives can go bad and do wonky things. No one makes 100% perfect yield components.

I copied my current os to wd blue ssd from Newegg and it gave my pc various errors and stuck in a reboot loop. Put the old os ssd back in and no issues. Had me thinking my pc was bad.

Unfortunately the SSD is on backorder. No indication of when it might come in. Also - it won't accept Paypal when on backorder.

I have. I've used DRAM-less drives from Inland/MicroCenter, Western Digital/Sandisk, ADATA, and even a 10+ year old 60GB Patriot. ALL of them absolutely run circles around the Crucial BX500 in real-world performance. The BX500 can take over 15 seconds to load something as simple as Notepad or Paint and 30+ seconds to load a web browser. Even a twenty year old hard disk wouldn't take that long. The thing is, it's not always slow. It starts out quite fast but deteriorates over a period of weeks to months. The ONLY way I've found to restore performance is to wipe the drive.

You're right, every company makes some defective drives. I just can't find any clear indication that this one is. It passes diagnostic tests, has no concerning SMART attributes, and has not had any obvious data integrity issues in the three years I've had it. It just keeps getting ungodly slow. And, numerous other people have reported the same issue with this model. I speculate that it might be some sort of firmware issue. I've seen others point to the controller but I have my doubts because a lot of other drives use the same SM2258XT/SM2259XT controller and this is the only one I hear complaints about. I'd love to know what's actually going on with it.
