Can the firmware be updated to read 4K Blu Rays, like it can on some drives?

Oops, assumed this was for an external blu ray drive.

DVD? Definitely worth upgrading and getting one that works with makemkv.
Agreed. If you're even looking at this, you probably care about physical media. Spend a little more and get a bluray drive. I got one for $80 last year that lets me rip 4k movies. It's only a shame bluray drm is such a pain on pc, you basically need cyberlink powerdvd to playback blurays.

The reviews scare me on this. It won't work on Mac or chrome book, micro usb pulls off easily, requires paying for Cyberlink software to use, and/or just quits after a short time if it ever worked. I'm not a tech guru that can overcome even some of that. I think I'll look elsewhere for a slickdeal with less risk.

Some of us have friends Smilie and like to say, "Here, take this." This being music, data, etc.
Then your friends must be on SD too to buy this so they can read the data 😃

Most libraries rent all of the newest movies on DVD only for free...I may need this for when my old laptop with a built in drive stops working as my bathtub theater.

It uses micro-USB and some reviews mention it breaking off. This is way too expensive for a DVD writer that's not even reliable. I get that external makes it more expensive but $20 for this in 2022 is absurd. I think it may be cheaper or even free to pickup someone's old PC from the trash that has a DVD-ROM (internal drive) and will never break.

Yes. Instead buying this item (which has too many imposed restrictions), buy a USB to SATA adapter that comes with a power brick/supply, because you need a power brick to run the DVD burner. Turn your internal DVD burner from years ago to external DVD burner. Those old DVD burners don't have so many restrictions. They cost nothing. I saved 5 or 6 of them from discarded PC's.
