Telling a macroeconomist that there's a glut because of a recession. Very cute, but also wrong.

On most products with chips, there's still a significant shortage of fab capacity, even on older processes like the 14nm the V1500B is on, because higher margin products are taking priority. You can tell that that's the case because in our year of the lord 2021, Syno opted for a V1000 embedded chip from November 2018 rather than a more modern AMD equivale... oh wait, no, AMD has no fab capacity, so there isn't an updated chip.

It might be slightly cheaper on Black Friday or Christmas, but there's no glut. This has been basically out of stock at MSRP or backordered until about four weeks ago. Even if somehow, magically, GlobalFoundries found an extra 14nm fab in the last six months (they've not), it'll be at least six months until there's a glut.

But you do you, focus entirely on demand, and not on supply. Downvote and move on.
so much glut i'm floating is raspberry pi's over here

I never really understood these. The cost of these units are very high, and of course no hard drives. I have graduated to two 14TB HDD in mirror on a simple Storage Space with SMB and put this in a server with a bunch of VMs. I am by no means an expert, but I can stream 4k from it with a FireStick, so it us plenty fast I assume. The price entry on these is so high I never bought one to give it a spin. Does the file system make that much of a difference?
Easy, they are small, low power, low heat easy to manage. I could have done the same thing you did but got a DS418play instead because I didnt feel like dealing with the other option. I work in IT and used to love dealing with servers and etc but now I just dont feel like it anymore.

This was an easier option for me and I have no regrets.

Yeah, I think the problem is people are focused on the lower-end units. Those do come on sale more regularly, but I don't think I've ever seen the niche units (DS1821+, DS1621xs+, DS620slim, for example) come on sale, outside of a mistake with cancelled orders. I've run out of bays on my older NAS, and I'm just not super comfortable with the idea of using an external unit, so I figured I'd get the DS1821+.

I got the 920 and regret not going larger. I'm upgrading to a 1821

It kicked the code out as invalid when I tried to check out with a 517 expansion unit. It took the code in the cart, but not at checkout.

1821+ is almost 2 years old already and potentially new update coming by end of this year if they follow their update trend in the past, I would rather wait….

just a heads up for people looking at the DS1522+ (Ryzen R1600) as a deal vs the DS1520+ (Celeron J4125). They nerfed the processor by going with AMD so you'll lose hardware accelerated transcoding for plex. Go with the 1621+ or even 1821+ (or just wait) if you don't care about plex.
The DS1522+ is a bargain bin synology and I don't see it holding its value in the future.

Why are these things so expensive compared with putting together a computer? I get that it's an out of the box system, but you can build a super awesome computer with better specs on everything for the price of that 1600 Nas. I don't get it?

Smaller Form Factor
Overall Less Heat due to Lower Power Consumption
Ready to use (may be)
… basically for STORAGE with added network capabilities.

Did you pick ZIP as the checkout?

Tell me about it!

I'm getting very impatient waiting for an update to my QNAP from (checks gmail for invoice) 5 years ago, with a CPU (checks Intel ARK) released 7 years ago.

You could run this off a single solar PV panel around the clock... just sayin. DS1821+ with 8 HDD, 32GB of RAM, 2xNVME, 1x10GBe card runs under 60w every day of the week...
